Experts on crime and punishment say the United States has
the harshest sentences and the most prisoners of any country
in the world.
Records kept at King's College in London reveal that with
2.3 million people behind bars, the United States has almost
a quarter of the world's prisoners even though it has less
than 5 percent of the population, The New York Times
reported Wednesday.
China, which has four times as many citizens, is a distant
second to the United States with 1.6 million prisoners, the
report said.
Michael H. Tonry, an author and leading authority on crime
policy, says the difference in incarceration policies
between the United States and Europe could be related to
having an economy that is more capitalistic and a political
culture that is less social democrat.
Tonry says prison sentences in the United States have
become "vastly harsher than in any other country to which
the United States would ordinarily be compared."
What are your thought on US leading the world in prison
population?

Canadian's vacation home an Arizona record
PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz., April 22 (UPI) -- Canadian Stephanie
Zekelman says she's surprised the $14 million she has agreed
to pay for a mansion in Paradise Valley, Ariz., reportedly
is a state record. "I didn't know it was news," the
Windsor, Ontario, resident told Canwest News Service. "It's
just a vacation home. I have family there, and I've wanted
a home there for many years, and that was it." The
10,000-square-foot in the tony Phoenix suburb means Zekelman
will be neighbors with the likes of former hockey greats
Wayne Gretzky and Claude Lemieux, jazz singer George Benson
and major league pitcher Randy Johnson. Bob Hassett, a
real estate agent representing the seller calls the
community "the Beverly Hills of Arizona."

Priest holds mass in arcade
A priest in the town of Avezzano, Italy, said he decided
that if he couldn't bring young people to mass, he would
bring mass to the video arcade. Father Duilio Testa, 78,
said falling church attendance among the younger generation
led him to hold a service in a video arcade that was packed
with youngsters, ANSA reported Tuesday. "At the start, they
were all a bit surprised," he said. "But then they stopped
playing and helped to prepare an altar and volunteered to
read bits of the Gospel. Everyone paid attention throughout
the holy mass." Testa credited his missionary work in Africa
with giving him the creativity to bring mass to young
people. ''I hit upon this idea thinking about the fact
that so many young people are distancing themselves from
the church and choosing to hang out together in different
ways and in different places, whether they be discos and
games arcades, away from parents with whom they don't feel
at ease,'' he said.

Escaped monkeys evade capture
The co-owner of a wildlife preserve north of Lakeland, Fla.,
said a dozen monkeys who pulled off a daring escape from
the facility are evading capture. Lex Salisbury, co-owner
of wildlife preserve Safari Wild and president of Lowry
Park Zoo, said the monkeys escaped en masse Saturday by
swimming the 8-foot-deep, 60-foot wide moat that surrounded
the island they were taken to Thursday, the Tampa (Fla.)
Tribune reported Tuesday. He said the patas monkeys,
considered among the fastest primates, have evaded capture
but are not considered dangerous. Salisbury said the monkeys,
which are native to Africa, have predator-evading experience
that will likely keep them safe from Florida wildlife.
"These guys are pretty smart," he said. "They'll be fine."
Salisbury said the current plan for catching the monkeys
involves leaving food for them at the same place every
day until they are lured into a routine and a trap can
be set.
