NASA seeks supersonic research projects
The U.S. space agency released its "Research Opportunities in
Aeronautics 2008" list, soliciting research in support of its
supersonics project. The National Aeronautics and Space
Administration project seeks to address technical challenges
associated with supersonic flight over land and to develop
technologies required to build future high mass entry systems
to enable the exploration of Mars and other planets. NASA said
it expects educational institutions, non-profit organizations
and industries engaged in fundamental research will be the

Powerful insecticide combo is created
U.S. scientists have developed a chemical cocktail including
a common insecticide and a plant protein to inhibit insects'
growth rates. Pennsylvania State University biologists said
their insecticide might be more lethal to crop pests than
either ingredient used alone. The "one-two punch" it delivers
also reduces the insects' chance of developing resistance,
the researchers said. "We found a synergistic effect, where
the two insecticides together decreased the growth rate of
caterpillars more than either one did alone," said Professor
Dawn Luthe. "The insect mortality rate was also much greater
than the sum of mortality rates when only one insecticide was
used." The researchers said their findings have important
implications for agriculture since nearly 20 percent of major
crops worldwide are annually lost to insects. Luthe,
Mississippi State University Professor Peter Ma and
researchers Srinidhi Mohan and W. Paul Williams report their
findings in the online journal PLoS One.

NASA ready to test astronaut escape system
The U.S. space agency said it is ready to conduct the first
flight test of an escape system designed for the Constellation
Program's Orion crew capsule. The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration said it has completed production of
hardware for use in the test of the astronaut escape system.
The hardware -- a structure that simulates the Orion crew
module -- was designed and fabricated at NASA's Langley
Research Center in Hampton, Va. The structure represents the
size, outer shape and mass characteristics of the space capsule
being designed to transport astronauts first to the International
Space Station then on to the moon by 2020. The initial
developmental flight test, called Pad Abort-1, will focus on
the ability of Orion's launch abort system to pull the crew
capsule safely away from the launch vehicle in the event of
problems on the launch pad or during the climb into orbit.
Planned for late this year, the test is the first in a series
of un-crewed abort flight trials to test the new system.
