Bills' Everett issues first statement since spinal cord injury
Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett feels fortunate to be
alive, and is determined to continue the significant progress
he's already made in the five weeks since sustaining a severe
spinal cord injury. "I have shown significant progress in my
recovery," Everett said Wednesday in a statement released by
Memorial Hermann/TIRR, where the player has spent the past
three weeks in rehab. "But I am also fully aware that the
recovery from this type of injury I have sustained is filled
with many peaks and valleys. "While the road to recovery is
long and hard, I am determined to fight through it each and
every day." The comments were Everett's first since he was
hurt while making a tackle during Buffalo's season opener
against Denver on Sept. 9. They came days after Everett was
able to take a few first steps with the assistance of a walker,
and had developed enough strength to use his feet to push himself
around in a wheelchair. Referring to those accomplishments as
"great triumphs," Everett added: "I maintain a positive attitude
and feel fortunate every day that I am alive and well."
Everett also thanked his family, friends, doctors and fans for
their support, saying he was "deeply humbled." Doctors described
Everett's injury as life-threatening, and feared he would never
walk again after he arrived at Buffalo's Millard Fillmore
Hospital paralyzed from the neck down. The prognosis changed a
few days later when Everett began showing voluntary movement
first in his legs and then his hands. Everett was transferred
to Houston because doctors felt it was important for him to be
close to his family and friends. The player makes his offseason
home in Houston and grew up in nearby Port Arthur, Texas.

Priest Holmes to practice with Chiefs; might play Sunday
Running back Priest Holmes will practice Wednesday for
the first time since a severe 2005 head and neck injury,
and Chiefs coach Herm Edwards says there's a chance Holmes
could play Sunday at Oakland. The Chiefs traded backup
running back Michael Bennett to Tampa Bay for draft picks
on Tuesday, creating a hole behind starter Larry Johnson
and speculation that the Chiefs might activate Holmes in
time for Sunday's game against the Raiders. Holmes "will
put the pads on. He will put the helmet on. Whether he
participates in the (Oakland) game or not, we'll see how
practice goes," Edwards said. Holmes sustained neck and
spinal injuries in a game at San Diego on Oct. 30, 2005,
when he was hit by Shawne Merriman. He was placed on the
physically unable to perform list and stayed there until
he showed up at training camp in River Falls, Wis., claiming
that he'd seen himself playing football in a dream. The
three-time Pro Bowler, who turned 34 this month, appears
to have lost about 10 pounds since July and looks fit.
Holmes is eligible to come off the inactive list this week,
and the Chiefs have 21 days beginning Wednesday to either
activate Holmes, place him on the injured reserve list or
waive him.

Leftwich replaces Harrington as Atlanta's starting QB
Byron Leftwich has replaced Joey Harrington as the Atlanta
Falcons' starting quarterback. Hoping to spark an offense
that's struggled without suspended quarterback Michael Vick,
coach Bobby Petrino said Wednesday he plans to keep Leftwich
as his starter for the rest of the season. "He has a very
strong arm," Petrino said. "He throws the ball deep down the
field, and he just needs to be able to see it, and I have the
confidence that he can put it in there. I think he'll do well."
The decision wasn't difficult for Petrino after the offense
failed to score off three New York turnovers on Monday night.
The Giants won 31-10, dropping Atlanta to 1-5. Petrino indicated
that Leftwich might have played against New York if he hadn't
missed so much practice time with a mild ankle sprain last week.
Offensively, the Falcons have scored only seven touchdowns.
Leftwich, who led the Jaguars to a 24-20 record when he started
during four years with Jacksonville, signed a two-year, $7
million contract last month after being released. In his only
appearance with Atlanta, Leftwich was 2-of-8 for 28 yards and
one interception after replacing Harrington in the fourth
quarter of a 20-13 loss at Tennessee two weeks ago.
The Falcons are 0-3 in the NFC going into Sunday's game at
New Orleans (1-4). Only St. Louis, at 0-5, has a worse
conference record. Petrino believes his team can still gain
ground. Petrino has seen enough of Harrington, whose statistics
are respectable with a 63.1 completion percentage and a passer
rating of 80.1, but the offense continues to languish.
"That's the big part of it," the coach said. "We need to
make a change and get something going." Signed to be the
backup to Vick after the Falcons traded Matt Schaub to Houston,
Harrington is 24-48 as a starter with Detroit, Miami and Atlanta.
Vick, who pleaded guilty in Virginia two months ago to federal
charges of bankrolling a dogfighting ring, led the Falcons to
39 wins and two playoff appearances in 65 games as a starter.
Last season he became the first NFL quarterback to rush for
1,000 yards in a single season. Petrino decided in a staff
meeting on Tuesday to bench Harrington and go with Leftwich.
"I brought them both in early this morning and met with them,"
Petrino said. "I wanted to make sure Joey knew first, then I
brought Byron in."
