Falcons reportedly offer Parcells vice president position
Bill Parcells could become the Atlanta Falcons' vice president
of football operations, a role that would put him in charge of
finding the team's next coach. Parcells is considering an offer
to join the team's front office, a person familiar with the
negotiations said on condition of anonymity because talks were
ongoing. Rich McKay, the team's president and general manager,
did not immediately return a phone message on Tuesday night.
The offer was first reported by ESPN.com. Falcons owner Arthur
Blank declined comment when asked about Parcells late Tuesday
night. Parcells' agent, Jimmy Sexton, did not immediately
return an e-mail seeking comment. Emmitt Thomas is serving as
Atlanta's interim head coach after Bobby Petrino resigned
suddenly a week ago. Petrino went 3-10 with the Falcons before
taking the Arkansas job. Parcells resigned in January after
four years as the Dallas coach. During a 19-year career that
also included coaching the New York Giants, New England
Patriots and New York Jets, Parcells made it to three Super
Bowls, winning twice with the Giants.
'Sporting News' names Brady Sportsman of the Year
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was chosen Sportsman
of the Year Tuesday by The Sporting News weekly magazine. He
won the award for the second time in four seasons. Brady was
chosen by the magazine's editorial staff. "Tom Brady has given
us one of the greatest seasons in NFL history," said John
Rawlings, senior vice president and editorial director of The
Sporting News. "You can't help but admire what he has
accomplished -- even if much of the NFL world has suddenly
turned anti-Patriots." Brady has led the Patriots to a 14-0
record and within two games of becoming the first team since
Miami in 1972 to finish the regular season undefeated. He's
first in the NFL in touchdown passes with 45, needing four
in the final two games to match Peyton Manning's record set
three years ago. Brady also leads the league in yards passing
(4,235), yards per passing attempt (8.42), yards passing per
game (302.5), quarterback rating (119.7) and passes for first
downs (210). San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson
received the award last season. Other finalists for the 2007
award included Packers quarterback Brett Favre, Manning,
Colorado Rockies left fielder Matt Holliday, Florida forward
Joakim Noah, and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden.

Redskins' Taylor among 2008 Pro Bowl selections
Sean Taylor's selection to the Pro Bowl was supposed to be a
crowning moment during a season in which he became a truly
dominant NFL safety. Instead, it's a tribute to a player who
was tragically lost from the game at age 24. The Washington
Redskins safety was selected as an NFC representative to the
2008 Pro Bowl on Tuesday, three weeks after he was fatally
wounded in a shooting at his home in Miami. Taylor was chosen
as the conference's top free safety in balloting by coaches,
players and fans. "It is well-deserved," center Casey Rabach
said. "If he would have been able to finish the season, he
would have been in there. It just shows the respect everybody
around the league had for him and what a great player he was."
Taylor is believed to be the second person elected posthumously
to an all-star game in a major American professional sports
league. Philadelphia Flyers goalie Pelle Lindbergh was voted
by fans to start in the 1986 NHL All-Star game after he was
killed in an automobile accident on Nov. 11, 1985. Taylor
led the NFC with five interceptions at the time of his death,
even though he had missed the previous two games because of a
knee injury. He also was leading the Pro Bowl voting among
fans at the time. But the numbers don't come close to vouching
for Taylor's vast improvement this season. In his first
three years in the NFL, he would mix big hits with big
mistakes. He led the league in missed tackles last year, but
his bone-jarring hits intimidated receivers so much that he
was chosen as a first alternate to the Pro Bowl. He then got
to play in the game after another player withdrew. This year,
Taylor was allowed to roam the field as a true free safety, a
hard-hitting ball hawk whose speed made anything deep virtually
off limits to the offense. Before his knee injury, the Redskins
had allowed only 21 plays of 20-plus yards over 8 3/4 games.

Smith, Peppers among four Panther starters to miss practice
Four starters, including Steve Smith and Julius Peppers,
missed practice on Tuesday for the Carolina Panthers. Coach
John Fox provided no further injury information on Peppers,
except repeating that the defensive end sprained his knee in
Sunday's win over Seattle. Peppers was in and out of the game
in the second half after getting hurt, and was seen with his
right knee wrapped after the game. Smith sat out Tuesday's
practice with an illness after catching eight passes for 72
yards against the Seahawks. Center Justin Hartwig (ankle)
and guard Geoff Hangartner (shoulder) also did not practice.
Receiver Keary Colbert (knee) remained sidelined after missing
Sunday's game. Quarterback Vinny Testaverde returned to
practice after missing all of last week with general soreness.
Undrafted rookie Matt Moore is in line to start Saturday night's
game against Dallas after he led the Panthers to the surprise
win over Seattle in Testaverde's absence. The Panthers
practiced Tuesday, which is a normal off day, because of the
short week ahead of Saturday's game.
Broncos release punter Todd Sauerbrun
The Denver Broncos released beleaguered punter Todd Sauerbrun
on Tuesday, bringing in his training camp rival Paul Ernster
to replace him. The team also placed safety Nick Ferguson on
injured reserve with a right knee injury and waived safety
Marviel Underwood, opening up a spot to promote safety Roderick
Rogers to the roster off the practice squad. The Broncos
declined comment about the release of Sauerbrun. However,
Sauerbrun's problems off the field likely contributed to the
team's decision. Sauerbrun faces legal trouble stemming from
an incident outside a restaurant in early December. He's
scheduled to appear in court Jan. 15 on an assault charge.
Sauerbrun was also waived by Denver last season following his
suspension for the first month for using a banned dietary
supplement. Upon his reinstatement, the Broncos and Sauerbrun
went separate ways, and he signed with New England. The 38-
year-old Sauerbrun returned to Denver on a one-year, $1.4
million contract after being granted his release from the
Patriots last spring. Sauerbrun was averaging 46.8 yards a
punt this season, with a net average of 36.1.
