Packers end high-profile search, hire Murphy to succeed Harlan
The Green Bay Packers board of directors unanimously approved
the appointment of Northwestern athletic director Mark Murphy
as the team's new top executive Monday, ending the search for
a successor to longtime Packers leader Bob Harlan. Murphy, a
former NFL player who has a law degree and an MBA in finance,
eventually will hold the titles of team president and CEO after
Harlan steps down. Harlan will stay in charge through the end
of the season, including any postseason games. The transition
formally will begin Jan. 1, with Murphy assuming the title of
president and CEO-elect. "The Green Bay Packers are very
pleased to name Mark Murphy as our President and CEO," Harlan
said in a statement. "He has an excellent background and record
of success in the business of athletics, and through his NFL
playing career brings a great understanding of our game to his
position. He'll be an outstanding leader for our franchise and
a great addition to our community. We're delighted to have Mark
join us." Murphy, 52, called it a "tremendous" opportunity.
"The Packers are one of the great franchises in all of
professional sports, with a rich history and incredible fan
support," Murphy said in a statement. "These are successful
times for the Packers. On the field they're performing well,
and off the field, they're in great shape, too. I look forward
to being a part of that continued success." Murphy played eight
years with the Washington Redskins, then became an assistant
executive director of the NFL Players Association and later a
trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. He then
served as athletic director at his alma mater, Colgate, before
moving to Northwestern.

Worrell latest Dolphins safety to go down and out
Miami safety Cameron Worrell tore his ACL in the Dolphins'
40-13 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, coach Cam Cameron
said. Worrell is the latest in a string of safeties Miami has
lost to injuries this season. Yeremiah Bell tore his Achilles'
tendon in Week 1 and will miss the rest of the season. Travares
Tillman started in Week 2 and was sidelined by a knee injury.
"You just have to deal with it," Cameron said Monday. "You've
got to look at it, you've got to deal with it and it's an
opportunity for the next guy to step up." Cameron said he was
not sure when a surgery to repair Worrell's knee would take
place, and said the team is still discussing possible roster
changes. "It's not what you want. I don't know that frustration
is the right word," Cameron said. "It's what we do -- that's
the business we're in. You deal with injuries." The 0-12 Dolphins
will play Sunday at Buffalo. Worrell has 49 tackles this
season. He has started six games. "Your safeties are critical,"
Cameron said. "Obviously, we've had some tough luck there."
Dungy to HBO: Patriots spy scandal sent wrong message
Sure, the postgame exchange between the Patriots' Bill
Belichick and the Colts' Tony Dungy was quite chilly after
their teams met last month. But Dungy doubted it was because
his coaching counterpart was angry over his earlier comments
about New England's spying scandal. During an interview on
HBO's Costas Now that will air Tuesday night, Dungy was
asked whether "frosty" was the proper characterization of
their brief handshake. "Well, it probably was," Dungy said.
"But that's Bill. Bill has always been that way with me."
Dungy told host Bob Costas that he had not heard from
Belichick about his comments in September that the Patriots
being caught spying was a "really sad day for the NFL."
"But what I meant was you had so many people looking at
this team and this organization," Dungy said. "They've
won three Super Bowls. We're talking about them as maybe
the best team ever. ... And to have something like that
happen, it just lets people say, 'Oh, you know, this is
how you win.' Or, 'This is OK, as long as you win.' And I
didn't think it was good for the NFL."

Sports Illustrated names Brett Favre 2007 Sportsman of the Year
Brett Favre's standout season for the resurgent Green Bay
Packers has earned him the title of 2007 Sports Illustrated
Sportsman of the Year, making him the fourth quarterback to
win the award in its 53-year history. The 38-year-old Favre
joins fellow quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw (1979), Joe Montana
(1990) and Tom Brady (2005) as recipients of the award, given
to an athlete who symbolizes the ideals of sportsmanship.
Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, said in the cover story of the
magazine's Dec. 10th issue that leadership is about finding
ways to raise his team's level of play. "You do that by
setting an example, by doing things the right way. I've always
shown up, I've always been prepared, I practice every day,"
Favre said. "I practice hard. I study. No matter what happens
on the field, I never point blame at anybody else. Everything
I do comes back to leadership, the example I want to set."
Favre has started a quarterback-record 249 consecutive games,
and this year surpassed Dan Marino for career touchdown passes
and pass attempts. He is 450 yards away from breaking Marino's
career record of 61,361 yards. Favre has had one of the best
seasons of his 17-year career, completing 67.4 percent of his
passes for 3,412 yards with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
He's on pace to surpass his career marks in completion percentage,
yards passing and fewest interceptions per attempts. The
magazine also recognized Favre's history of philanthropy,
including his Fourward Foundation that's donated more than $4
million to charities in Wisconsin and Mississippi and assisted
Mississippi's Gulf Coast counties after Hurricane Katrina in
2005. Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade won the magazine's award
last year.
