Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., offered proposals to help
homeowners facing foreclosure and displaced workers as ways
to address the souring U.S. economy.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee reiterated
his opposition to "tax breaks for builders, funds to
purchase homes in foreclosure and tax credits that are not
targeted to where the need is greatest ... ."
McCain proposed a federal program requiring eligible
homeowners to seek help from the federal government. If
they qualify, they would leave the program with a refinanced
mortgage allowing them to remain in their homes.
McCain outlined a new job training program that would give
displaced workers flexibility and incentives to seek
retraining and re-enter the workforce quickly, remarks
posted on McCain's Web site said.
"I propose that we build a new system so that as women and
men work, their taxes help to build up a buffer account
against lost earnings," he said. "Then, if they are
unfortunate enough to lose a job, they will be able to
better meet their obligations."
Reacting to his proposal, Democratic hopeful Sen. Hillary
Clinton, D-N.Y., said on her Web site that McCain offered
a "half-hearted version of the very plan he criticized."
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., battling Clinton for the
Democratic presidential nomination, said on his Web site,
McCain's solution to the housing crisis "seems a lot like
the George Bush solution of sitting by and hoping it
passes while families face foreclosure and watch the
value of their homes erode."
What are your thoughts on McCains economic plan?

Postal Service defends $13,500 dinner tab
The U.S. Postal Service says a $13,500 dinner at an expensive
Florida steak house was a good way to woo corporate clients.
The tab at Ruth's Chris Steak House in Orlando in 2006 came
to light during a Government Accountability Office
investigation of abuse of government credit cards. It
included $3,000 for drinks -- mostly premium brands of
liquor -- and 81 entrees, including every available type of
steak, the Orlando Sentinel reported. The GAO has found
what appears to be a lack of control on credit card spending,
with holders able to charge as they wish without
authorization. Investigators found cards used to buy
lingerie, while the Pentagon was charged $77,700 for men's
suits. Gerry McKiernan, a spokesman for the Postal Service,
says the Ruth's Chris dinner was legitimate. He said four
Postal Customer Councils held the dinner, inviting more
than 100 people, during a conference in Orlando. McKiernan
also pointed out that the Postal Service, unlike other
government agencies, makes its own money and has to at
least break even. To which GAO investigator Gregory Kutz
responded -- "Every time you lick a stamp, think of Ruth's
Chris."

Owner stuck with ticket for stolen car
A victim of car theft said he will never pay a 1 1/2-year-old
Washington parking ticket issued for his car while it was
stolen. The D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles sent a
collections agency after Steve Steinberg for $205, despite
his claim that the ticket was issued after his car was
stolen Sept. 24, 2006, WUSA-TV, Washington, reported.
Steinberg reportedly has promised he will never fork over
the money and wonders why D.C. police failed to realize
the car was stolen when it was ticketed. Steinberg said
the D.C. officials reported the car was possibly towed
and given to someone before it as found Sept. 28, 2006.
"During the time the car was stolen the District had their
hands on the car twice and they failed to run the tags,"
Steinberg said. Ward One City Council Member Jim Graham
said he would look over the case and dismiss the citation
if Steinberg backs up his claim with evidence, WUSA
reported.

Police: Parents argued over gang choice
Police in Commerce City, Colo., said a man who created a
disturbance at his ex-girlfriend's job was upset about her
choice of street gang for their child. Officers said
Joseph Manzanares, 19, who was fined $810 after pleading
guilty to disorderly conduct, knocked over a computer and
a magazine stand at the Hollywood Video, which employs his
ex-girlfriend, while the two were arguing, the Rocky
Mountain News reported. A police report said the woman
told officers she split with Manzanares, the father of her
child, because they have "different ideas about how the
baby should be raised." Officer David Swift said he asked
the woman to be more specific, and she explained that the
parents belong to different street gangs. "They could not
agree on which gang the baby would claim," Swift said.

What are your thought on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints?
"I'm one who believes in religious freedom, HOWEVER, the
line is drawn when children are harmed or in the case of
abuse--especially sexual abuse. If this sect wishes to
practice polygamy, fine. Confine it to women and men who
are CONSENTING adults. Non-consensual sex is rape, no
matter how pretty the words you choose to wrap it in.
Thirteen year olds are not adults. They're children.
Children should not be having sex with adults period,
regardless of your religious convictions. It's perverted
and wrong. It damages children, not just physically, but
emotionally and mentally. Pregnancy at such a young age
can damage a child and to knowingly allow it or even
encourage it is horribly wrong. If this sect believes
that rape of women and children is ok, how does that
glorify God? Pedophiles and rapists (and that's what this
sect has shown itself be) should be punished--severely, and
not with a slap on the hand. TO MR. MERRILL JESSOP; the
"outcry" and outrage isn't going to be over taking the
children into protective custody, but over your encouraging
and condoning pedophilia and rape. You, Mr. Jessop, are to
be patterning yourself after Christ in responsible and
loving oversight of your flock. You, sir, have failed in
that task and failed miserably. You, Mr. Jessop, should
be fully punished by the law--federal and state--for your
actions as much as any who participated in this travesty."
Sylvia
"I guess anyone can use religion as an excuse for
pedophilia. Weird isn't it that only the very young is
forced into having sex with older men in this "Faith"."
"It is about time that something is being done to these
people. Since when is it legal to force ANYONE into
marriage, let alone a young girl? These old men are
disgusting. I can't even begin to wonder what is wrong
with the mothers. I realize this is how they grew up but
isn't it every parent's wish that their child have a
better life than they did? If not...they should not have
their children."
