Hi! I'm Lizzy!! and I'm not Martha!!!
* Should moth balls ever be used inside a sweeper bag. I
clean for a person that does I'm not sure why but think
it's because she has a dog in the house. The fumes are
terrible everytime I run the sweeper.
Are they harmful? I get a headache and my nose hurts. Isn't
there a better thig she could for odor like maybe good old
baking soda?
Please help or she may need a new cleaning person.
LIZ
I hit the Internet and all my books for the answer for you
plus VERY important recent info on mothballs. I can't take
the smell at all. But then I've told you many times I think
I could have been a nose in Grasse! I can smell anything
a mile away. I am so sensitive. Mothballs are way off my
chart. I use fresh rosemary in cheesecloth bags in my off-
season woolens.
So the fast answer is mothballs are considered a pesticide
and should be disposed of at a licensed hazardous waste
facility.
Avoid inhaling the fumes of mothballs. NO mothballs in thee
sweeper bag...end stop!
Which brings me to a warning every parent should know....
P.S. If you're interested we now have a forum. You can post
comments on this and recent issues at... Not Martha forum

Some teenagers are using mothballs to get high, a trend that
may be underreported, researchers say.
Reuters reported July 27 that users place mothballs, which
contain paradichlorobenzene, in a bag and inhale from it for
about 10 minutes. Some users also chew mothballs. The term
"BAGGING" has been used to describe the habit.
Mental impairment, loss of coordination, and scaly skin may
be symptoms of mothball abuse. Paradichlorobenzene, also
found in air fresheners and insect repellents, can cause
anemia and liver and kidney failure.
One French teen found sniffing mothball fumes took six months
to recover; a twin sister took three months. Researchers
noted that only three such cases have been reported but said
the habit may be more widespread.
The report appears in the July 27, 2006 issue of the New
England Journal of Medicine.
HOW TO SPOT MOTHBALL POISONING
* Try to determine whether a person or pet has been in contact
with mothballs. If you suspect that a child or pet has eaten
mothballs, do not wait for symptoms. Seek medical help
immediately.
* Watch for signs of eye, nose, throat and lung irritation,
respiratory problems, vertigo, confusion, headache, nausea,
vomiting and/or fatigue.
* Look for convulsions within an hour of when mothballs are
ingested.
* Investigate any liver or kidney problems, or be suspicious
if hemolytic anemia develops.
* Keep in mind that long-term exposure to mothball vapors
can cause adverse effects. If an elderly person or her house
reeks of mothballs, warn her of the risks of mothball
poisoning.

Ahhh... My Hard Drive Just Crashed...
These are words none of us ever want to scream. But it
happened to me. Unfortunately I learned the hard way and
did not have a back up of my data. WHY? Well I always
thought it was hard to do and that you needed to buy add-
itional hardware. And then the worst part was restoring
from your backup.
Well I found the perfect product and the BEST part is you
can get it for just the cost of s&h... $5.99. It retails
for $39.99, but we know how important your data is to you
and wanted to give everyone the chance to own this CDRom
called RestoreIT.

* Mothballs contain naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene -
naphthalene is the most dangerous.
* Store mothballs in a well-ventilated area away from
children and pets.
* Do not store baby clothes in mothballs. The naphthalene
can be absorbed through the skin when the child is dressed
in the clothes.
* Signs of mothball poisoning in the elderly may be mis-
taken for dementia.
* Mothballs are hazardous waste and should be disposed of
at a licensed hazardous waste facility.
* Do not handle mothballs with your bare hands. Always wear
gloves.
* Mothball ingestion or repeated exposure to fumes can be
fatal.
HOWEVER..mothballs have an interesting use. This is from
reader Marcella White of Edmonton, Kentucky
I worked as a rural mail carrier in Florida for many years.
I often dreaded what I might find each time I opened the
mailbox — wasps, spiders, scorpions and frogs were the most
common occupants. One of my customers kept a small glass
jar of mothballs in her mailbox, with holes in the lid so
the fumes could escape. There were never any insects or
other creatures in her mailbox.
Now I live in Kentucky and have a small well house where
various spiders and a copperhead snake had taken up
residence. I remembered the mothballs! So, early each
spring, I put new mothballs in the glass jar, and there
are no pump-house occupants at all.
