New system makes hydrogen from plant sugar
A U.S. scientist says he has developed a technology that can
convert plant sugars into hydrogen to be used in hydrogen-fueled
cars. Virginia Tech Assistant Professor Percival Zhang says
the process involves combining plant sugars, water and a
cocktail of powerful enzymes to produce hydrogen and carbon
dioxide under mild reaction conditions. "This is revolutionary
work," said Zhang. "This has opened up a whole new direction in
hydrogen research. With technology improvement, sugar-powered
vehicles could come true eventually." Zhang and colleagues said
they believe they can produce hydrogen from cellulose, which has
a similar chemical formula to starch, but is far more difficult
to break down. In laboratory studies, the scientists collected
13 different, well-known enzymes and combined them with water
and starches inside a specially designed reactor. The resulting
broth reacted to produce only carbon dioxide and hydrogen, with
no leftover pollutants. However, they said the amount of hydrogen
produced was too low for commercial use and the speed of the
reactions wasn't optimal. Zhang and colleagues described the
system -- called the world's most efficient method for producing
hydrogen -- this week in New Orleans during the American Chemical
Society's 235th national meeting.

Researchers closer to quantum computing
Quantum computing is currently mostly fodder for science fiction
writers, but U.S. scientists say they've moved one step closer to
realizing that technology. Northwestern University Professor
Prem Kumar said he and his colleagues recently demonstrated
one of the basic building blocks for distributed quantum
computing: using entangled photons generated in optical fibers.
"Because it is done with fiber and the technology that is already
globally deployed, we think it is a significant step in harnessing
the power of quantum computers," Kumar said. Quantum computing
differs from classical computing in that a classical computer
works by processing "bits" that exist in two states, either one
or zero. Quantum computing uses quantum bits, or qubits, which,
in addition to being one or zero, can also be both one and zero
simultaneously, the scientists said, noting that's possible
because qubits are quantum units like atoms or photons that
operate under the rules of quantum mechanics instead of classical
mechanics. The research that included Jun Chen, Joseph Altepeter,
Milja Medic, Kim Fook Lee and Burc Gokden of Northwestern, as
well as Robert Hadfield, and Sae Woo Nam of the National
Institute of Standards and Technology appears in the journal
Physical Review Letters.

NASA starts new science Web site
The U.S. space agency announced the start of a new Web site
designed to provide information about its scientific endeavors
and achievements. The National Aeronautics and Space
Administration's science mission directorate said the site
will provide in-depth coverage of NASA's past, present and
future science missions, along with features that include:
-- Iteractive tables and searches for Earth, heliophysics,
planetary and astrophysics missions.
-- Insight into dark matter and dark energy, planets around
other stars, climate change, Mars and space weather.
-- Resources for researchers, including links to upcoming
science solicitations and opportunities.
-- Expanded "For Educators" and "For Kids" pages to provide
access to a broader range of resources for learning the
science behind NASA missions.
The new Web page is available at http://nasascience.nasa.gov
