NASA gets ready for another space mission
Now that the latest space shuttle Endeavour mission is completed,
the U.S. space agency said it's preparing for the May launch of
space shuttle Discovery. National Aeronautics and Space
Administration officials said Discovery's two solid rocket
boosters and 15-story external tank are undergoing final work
and checkouts in the Kennedy Space Center's massive Vehicle
Assembly Building. The shuttle itself is being readied to be
moved to the assembly building. The STS-124 missio n is to be
the 26th shuttle flight to the International Space Station and
the second of three flights that will carry elements of the
Japanese laboratory Kibo to the ISS. Discovery is scheduled to
lift off at 7:26 p.m. EDT May 25 from launch pad 39A at the
space center.

Ants may provide better human medicines
U.S. molecular biologists have determined proteins found in
the intestines of some ants might be used to create new
antibiotics for gram-negative bacteria. Princeton University
researcher Natividad Ruiz, lead author of the study, and his
colleagues discovered two key proteins guide one of the two
groups of pathogenic bacteria that make carpenter ants' strong
outer shells -- their defense against the world. The work,
the biologists said, could allow researchers to create
antibiotics against gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli
and salmonella. Such antibiotics would destroy the bacteria by
disabling the mechanism that produces their protective coating.
The study that included Princeton Professor Thomas Silhavy and
researchers from Harvard University is to be reported in the
April 8 online edition of the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.

Network of brain cells supports language
U.S. scientists say they've found a neural network connecting
brain areas critical for language is larger and more complex
in humans than in chimpanzees. The network -- called the
arcuate fasciculus -- connects brain regions necessary for
the comprehension and production of speech. Researchers at
the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University
made their discovery using a new, non-invasive imaging technique
called diffusion tensor imaging, or DTI. The scientists used
DTI to measure the size and trajectory of the arcuate fasciculus
in humans, rhesus macaques and chimpanzees. "The human arcuate
fasciculus differed from that of the rhesus macaques and
chimpanzees in having a much larger and more widespread
projection to areas in the middle temporal lobe," said Professor
James Rilling. "In humans, it seems the brain not only evolved
larger language regions, but also a network of fibers to connect
those regions (that) support humans' superior language capabilities."
"DTI now makes it possible to understand how evolution changed the
wiring of the human brain to enable us to think, act and speak
like humans," study co-author Professor Todd Preuss said.
The study findings appeared in the online version of the journal
Nature Neuroscience.
