Good Morning,
I hope you had a nice weekend. My son turned seven over the
weekend so I had a house full of kids to keep me busy. If
I could only have bottled some of their energy and saved it
for Monday morning! Enjoy today's stories!
Until Tomorrow,
Erin

Microsoft, Sony In Blu-ray-For-Xbox Talks
Microsoft and Sony officials are in talks that could lead to
a version of the Xbox video game console equipped with a Blu-ray
high-definition DVD player. Sony Electronics U.S. president
Stan Glasgow revealed the discussions at a media dinner Thursday
in San Francisco, according to an account of the event published
by London's Financial Times. Glasgow said his company is also
engaged in talks aimed at adding Sony Blu-ray to devices made
by Apple, according to the paper. Microsoft found itself
without a high-definition video partner last month after HD
DVD developer Toshiba said it would drop the format. Toshiba's
announcement followed commitments by virtually all major
Hollywood studios to back Blu-ray. Days after Toshiba formally
pulled the plug on HD DVD, Microsoft said it would discontinue
an external Xbox 360 drive that supports the high-definition
movie format. Microsoft had been selling an HD DVD player as a
$129 add-on for the Xbox 360. Existing units are now selling
for less than half of that on eBay. The death of HD DVD puts
Microsoft in a quandary. Sony's PlayStation 3 console features
a built-in Blu-ray player. With HD DVD no longer viable,
Microsoft needs to find an alternate high-definition format
for the Xbox. The company could itself move to Blu-ray. But
it might also reject its rival's technology and focus instead
on offering high-definition downloads through its Xbox Live
online content service. Microsoft already sells a limited
selection of HD television and movie downloads on Xbox Live,
which boasts more than 10 million members. In the meantime,
Microsoft has said that HD DVD's discontinuation won't hurt
Xbox 360 sales -- insisting that it's games, and not movies,
that dictate console sales.

Paul McCartney reportedly inks iTunes deal
The most notable band absent from Apple's digital music store
may finally be making its way to iTunes, as long-time skeptic
Paul McCartney has reportedly signed a $600 million deal with
Apple. London publication The Telegraph reports that McCartney
has decided to finally give his approval to allow the Beatles
catalog to make its way to iTunes. The paper claims that Apple
offered McCartney as much as $600 million as part of the deal.
McCartney has been one of the most notorious holdouts for
entering the digital music age, and was especially protective
about his work as lead singer for the Beatles. The legendary
rock singer has had a tumultuous relationship with Apple, not
the least of which is the fact that a company called "Apple
Corps" actually has control over the music from the Beatles.
No prospective date was given for when Beatles music might
actually make it to iTunes.

South Korea swaps first astronaut
South Korea says its first astronaut will now be a female
engineer, after Russian officials rejected the initial
candidate over a breach of rules. Yi So-yeon, 29, is to
replace Ko San, 31, on a Russian flight to the International
Space Station in April. Russia's Federal Space Agency requested
the change because Mr Ko broke training centre rules, a senior
official said. South Korean officials played down the breaches,
which involved removing reading material from the centre.
On one occasion, Mr Ko sent a training book back to South
Korea - something he said was by mistake. On another, he
received a book from a Russian colleague that he was not meant
to read, said Lee Sang-mok of South Korea's Ministry of Education,
Science and Technology. 'The Russians emphasised the importance
of abiding by the rules, as even small mistakes can bring about
grave consequences in space," Mr Lee said. Mr Ko, who beat
more than 36,000 other applicants to the position, has been
training in Russia since last year. He will now serve as the
back-up astronaut when Ms Yi flies with two Russian cosmonauts
to the International Space Station in early April.
Ms Yi will spend seven or eight days there, conducting a
series of scientific tests. The mission will make South Korea
the sixth Asian country to put an astronaut in space.
