LIVING GREEN - Friday, April 18, 2008
-----------------------------------------------------------
Good morning,
Imagine how much energy it takes to heat 50-60 gallons of
water to 130 F or so and keep it at that temperature all the
time! That is exactly what a traditional water heater has to
do in order to provide your house with a ready supply of hot
water.
If your water heater is relatively new it is probably cost
prohibitive to replace it, but if your tank is ten to fifteen
years or older you might seriously want to consider replacing
it with a tankless water heater. You can very realistically
save yourself ten to twenty percent off your water heating
bill.

* Water heating is the third largest energy expense in your
home. It typically accounts for about 13% of your utility
bill.
* Install a tank-less water heater. These small 'on-demand'
wall units are now readily available. They heat water only
when it's needed and use half the energy of conventional
heaters. Priced at about $650 to $1,000.
* Tankless Water Heaters, also called Instantaneous or Demand
Water Heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed. Tra-
ditional storage water heaters produce standby energy losses
that cost you money. We do not leave our homes heated while
vacationing. We only heat our homes when there is a demand
for heat. In the same way, a Tankless Water Heater is used
only when there is a demand for hot water.
* When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels
through a pipe into the unit. In an electric Tankless Water
Heater an electric element heats the water. In a gas-fired
Tankless Water Heater a gas burner heats the water. As a
result, Tankless Water Heaters deliver a constant supply of
hot water. You don't need to wait for a storage tank to fill
up with enough hot water.
