Scientists say pyramids could be concrete

Scientists are taking a new look at Egypt's pyramids to see
if some of the blocks could have been made from concrete.
Linn W. Hobbs, a materials science professor at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, told The Boston Globe there is a chance
ancient Egyptians could have cast the blocks from synthetic
material instead of carving them from quarries. Scientists
have long believed Romans were the first to use structural
concrete. Undergraduates in MIT's Materials in Human Experience
class are building a scale-model pyramid made of quarried
limestone and blocks cast from crushed limestone sludge
fortified with clay, silica and natural desert salts.
Archaeologists say there is no evidence the pyramids are built
of any synthetic material, the newspaper said. Hobbs said the
concrete theory, advanced in the 1980s by French chemical
engineer Joseph Davidovits, is fascinating because it would
mean the ancient Egyptians were great materials scientists as
well as great civil engineers.

	   Lights seen over Phoenix, Florida

Dozens of Phoenix-area residents have reported seeing
unexplained red lights flying over the city, while witnesses
reported similar lights in Florida. KTAR-FM, Phoenix, said
it received dozens of calls from residents who claimed to
have seen the lights above the city for about 13 minutes
before they disappeared to the east, the radio station
reported. "From my position, it looked like they were just
hanging, not moving at all," one witness told KTAR. He said
he "absolutely" saw something. Meanwhile, witnesses in
St. Augustine, Fla., said they saw mysterious lights fly
toward one another in the sky during the weekend, WKMG-TV,
Orlando, Fla., reported. "I looked up and it was like these
two fiery balls like flying across the sky, sort of in
formation," said Brandon Puckett, 12. "They were like
flying toward each other."

James Bond-type escape hood is developed

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says it has produced
an emergency escape hood that can protect against nerve agents,
as well as toxic chemicals. The department's science and
technology directorate said its goal was to obtain a "one size
fits all" concealable hood weighing under a pound, folding to
the dimensions of a DVD case and "donnable" in 10 seconds.
Furthermore, the hood had to be maintenance-free, capable of
filtering nerve, blood, and blister agents, remove toxic
industrial chemicals and fit two-to-a-breast pocket. Department
officials said it contracted with a British company -- Avon
Protection Systems -- that has offices in Cadillac, Mich., to
develop and produce a mask designated the EH-15 (for Escape
Hood-15 minutes). When packed, the mask is only 3/4-inch thick
and provides at least 15 minutes of protection against chemicals
and biologics and has a three-year shelf life. DHS officials
said 10 prototypes have been made so far and the first batch
of EH-15 masks is to be produced during the next month.
