Reports: Jaguars star DT Stroud faces steroid suspension
Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud practiced as usual
Wednesday despite uncertainty about his future. A newspaper
and a radio station reported that Stroud is facing a four-game
suspension for violating the NFL's steroids and related
substances policy. The Florida Times-Union and WJXL-AM in
Jacksonville, citing anonymous sources, said Stroud tested
positive for banned supplements. According to the Times-Union,
Stroud's 'A' sample came back positive last week. The paper
said he exercised his right to have his 'B' sample tested Monday.
Stroud, a three-time Pro Bowl tackle who has 29 tackles and
three sacks this season, declined to address the reports
Wednesday, but said he expects to play at New Orleans.
"I'll be there Sunday," Stroud said. "I'm not here to squash
rumors. I'm here to play ball. Whatever happens will happen.
But right now, I'm going to focus on New Orleans. I have no
comment on anything else." Stroud missed five games last season
because of an ankle injury and then had micro-fracture surgery
early this year. Once considered cutting-edge, the operation --
which creates small holes around the bone in hopes of stimulating
new cartilage growth -- has become much more common in recent years.
It was unclear whether Stroud's reported positive test had anything
to do with his rehabilitation regimen. The NFL does not comment
on any matter involving its confidential drug policy.

Jets WR Coles has concussion, status for Sunday uncertain
Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles has a concussion and it
was uncertain Wednesday if he'll play in New York's game against
Washington this weekend. Coach Eric Mangini addressed Coles'
injury during a conference call with Redskins beat writers.
Mangini didn't mention Coles in his earlier news conference
with Jets writers. "Any time you have an injury it is scary,"
Mangini said. "With a guy like Laveranues who is so tough, you
have to be careful and make sure you go through the same process
that you would go through with every other player. That is what
we are doing." The Jets wide receiver didn't practice
Wednesday and wouldn't address the injury because it's against
team policy. Mangini was unsure if Coles will be ready to play
Sunday against the Redskins. "We will go through the process
and look at him throughout the course of the week and evaluate
him when we get a lot closer to the game," Mangini said.
Coles was injured last Sunday with 7:41 left in the Jets'
13-3 loss to Buffalo when he jumped to catch a pass from
Chad Pennington and was immediately hit in the middle of the
back by Terrence McGee. Coles' chest and head slammed to the
turf and he stayed face-down for several minutes. He was
eventually able to walk off the field, but didn't return.
Coles has 42 catches for 473 yards and a team-leading six
touchdowns. He hasn't missed a game since his rookie season
in 2000, and has a streak of 104 consecutive regular-season
games played. On Wednesday, Coles was on the practice field
in green sweats and a Jets cap while the wide receivers went
through drills during the half-hour window the media get to
watch. He also spoke a few times with Pennington, his good
friend who was benched in favor of second-year quarterback
Kellen Clemens. It is believed to be the second concussion
the star receiver has suffered in 10 months. Coles was tackled
hard by Miami's Zach Thomas during a game last Christmas, a
hit that left him motionless on the Dolphin Stadium turf for
a few seconds and caused a cut on Coles' head. It was reported
that Coles suffered a concussion, but the Jets never verified
the injury. The wide receiver was back in the starting lineup
the following weekend against Oakland.
Texans quarterback Schaub likely out against Raiders with
concussion
Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was still feeling the
effects of a concussion from a helmet-to-helmet hit on
Wednesday, and coach Gary Kubiak said he probably wouldn't
play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. Schaub, who has
started every game this season for the Texans since an
offseason trade with Atlanta, said his health has improved
dramatically since he was knocked out of Sunday's game against
the San Diego Chargers. "It's feeling better, clearing up a
little bit," he said. "Headaches are subsiding, so we'll take
it day to day." Schaub was injured when he was blindsided by
Drayton Florence after throwing his second interception in
Houston's loss to the Chargers. It was the second straight
week he'd been knocked out of the game by a helmet-to-helmet
blow. Schaub left the previous week's game against Tennesee
on two occasions, the second time with a hip injury. He said
this was his first concussion. Schaub sat on the sideline
rubbing his temples for several minutes before he was taken
to the locker room. "It was hurting. I had headaches," he
said. "I was a little out of it and not really with it and
really cloudy and foggy in my head. It was a weird feeling
not ever experiencing anything like that prior." With Schaub
likely out, Sage Rosenfels should get the third start of his
career and his first since a 22-0 loss to Cleveland in 2005
when he was with Miami. Rosenfels relieved Schaub against
the Chargers, completing 17 of 27 passes for 176 yards with
one touchdown and two interceptions.
