- Computer Tip: Wheel Mouse Tricks
Today is Thanksgiving Day here in the United States. On this
day we should all pause, if only for a few moments, to reflect
on what we have to be thankful for. Most of us take many of
our blessings for granted, but one of the metaphysical laws
of life is that in order to continue to receive blessings, we
need to be thankful for the blessings we already have.
Having said that, I want to thank all of you good people for
taking the time to read my writings. Without you, my words
would be all for nothing. So thank you. Read on, rock on, and
if you count your blessings, you'll always show a profit.

WEBMASTER TIP - Contrast
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: I seem to visit a lot of sites that don't have enough
contrast between the text the background color. I have a hard
time reading text there isn't enough contrast and usually end
up leaving the site rather than struggle with it. Is there any-
thing I can do besides copy and paste the text into a text
editor to read it?
Simon Says: What if I told you that you could change the back-
ground color on other people's web sites! Just type or paste
this code into the address bar of your browser:
javascript:void(document.bgColor='#FFFFFF')
...and it will change the page color to white. If white doesn't
work, you can change it to any color you want. Enter the color
you want in place of #FFFFFF, but be sure you don't accidentally
remove one of the single quotation marks that surround the color
or it won't work. I know this trick works in IE, but I haven't
tried it in other browsers. You will need to have a JavaScript
capable browser and have your browser preferences enabled for
JavaScript for it to work.
This JavaScript trick won't work if the page uses a background
image instead of a background color -- unless you turn images
off in your browser preferences. Short of that, you can simply
press Ctrl + A to highlight the entire page. That will give you
a blue highlight color around the text with a white text color.
While not looking exactly pretty, it's fairly easy to read.
This should serve as a reminder to all webmasters, a lot of
people don't have the same vision quality that you do. If you
don't want to have people leave your site because of your site
design, always make sure there's plenty of contrast between
the text and the background color or image.

SURFIN' THE WEB - TechCrunch
TechCrunch, founded on June 11, 2005, is a weblog dedicated
to obsessively profiling and reviewing new Internet products
and companies. In addition to new companies, we will profile
existing companies that are making an impact
That's what they say anyway. I read the first blog entry (at
the time of this writing) about how the music industry's greed
has pitted consumers against them, and how the music industry
wants the government to tax internet users, in essence, so they
(the music industry) will have a guaranteed income, and I was
impressed enough to make this the feature site. It's all good.

THE ODDBALL WALL - Laughable People
On this day in 1888, Harpo Marx was born. For younger readers
who may not have heard of Harpo Marx, he was one of five
siblings known as the Marx Brothers. They were a famous comedy
team whose offbeat movies, television appearances and vaudeville
routines kept America and the world laughing for decades. Todays
quiz is about comedians...
1) There were five Marks brothers. Chico, Harpo, Groucho, and
Zeppo were four of them. What's the name of the fifth Marx
brother?a. Gumbo b. Gonzo c. Gummo
2) The Marx brothers didn't start off as comedians, they first
made their mark (or marx!) as musicians and singers. Another
musical comedian was born Alfred Matthew Yankovic, otherwise
known as who?
a. Wild Al Yankovic b. Weird Al Yankovic c. The Russian Rube
3) Another musically inclined comedian had a song titled "King
Tut" that reached the top 40 in the Billboard singles chart.
Who is this wild and crazy guy?
a. Steve Martin b. Dan Aykroyd c. Roger Miller
4) Dan Aykroyd was one-half of The Blues Brothers. Who was the
other?
a. Bill Murray b. John Belushi c. John Candy
5) Murray Langston used to crack me up on the old Gong Show.
Who was he known as when he performed with a paper bag over
his head?
a. The Nut Bag b. Anonymous John c. The Unknown Comic
6) I like off-beat comedians whose humor doesn't rely on
vulgarity. One such comedian with a deadpan delivery probably
has more material stolen from him than any other comedian. A
typical one-liner of his:
"I almost had a psychic girlfriend...but she left me before we
met."
Who is this comic with bad hair?
a. Steven Wright b. Woody Allen c. Carrot Top
7) Another off-beat comic with bad hair who probably has the
most unusual delivery/personality you've ever seen, offers
one-liners like:
"I ran three miles today. Finally I said, 'Lady, keep your
purse.'"
Who is this joker with the awful "little dutch boy" haircut?
a. BobCat Goldwaith b. Emo Philips c. Benny Hill
8) One of my favorite old-time comedians created many memorable
characters, such as Clem Kadiddlehopper, Cauliflower McPugg,
Freddy the Freeloader, Willie Lump-Lump, and The Mean Widdle
Kid, whose most famous expression, "I dood it." became a
national slogan. Who is he?
a. Red Skelton b. Milton Berle c. Red Buttons
And now for one that's sure to make you say grace...
9) Gracie Allen was a famous comedian and also the wife of a
famous comedian. Who was she married to?
a. Fred Allen b. Steve Allen c. George Burns
Answers below, here's the scoring:
9 correct: Perfection!
7-8 correct: Outstanding
5-6 correct: Very Good
2-4 correct: Fairly Fair
0-1 correct: Turn the TV off
Answers:
1) c. Gummo
2) b. Weird Al Yankovic
3) a. Steve Martin
4) b. John Belushi
5) c. The Unknown Comic
6) a. Steven Wright
7) b. Emo Philips
8) a. Red Skelton
9) c. George Burns

COMPUTER TIPS - Wheel Mouse Tricks
If your mouse has a scroll wheel on it there are a couple of
neat tricks you can do while surfing using IE that you may not
be aware of.
1) Hold down the Shift key and spin the mouse wheel on a web
page and Explorer goes backward or forward through your current
browser session's history, depending on which direction you
spin the wheel.
2) Hold down the Ctrl key and spin the wheel and text on the
web page you're viewing will get larger or smaller, depending
on which way you spin the wheel. For Opera users, it magnifies
both the images and the text. This won't work on all sites.
Sites using CSS to control the font size are unaffected, at
least in IE.

Until next week, ponder these words of Henry Ward Beecher: The
unthankful heart... discovers no mercies; but let the thankful
heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron,
so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!
Have an interesting day, Simon
