I heard an alarm going off in this building, and since no one
seemed to be around I decided to investigate it. I found the
alarm and tried to shut it off but it wouldn't turn off with
the on/off switch. So then I unplugged it, but the alarm kept
sounding. Then I noticed a compartment for backup batter power
and removed the batteries, but the darned alarm kept sounding.
This is crazy, I thought to myself. Then I found a secret panel
with an emergency on/off switch and turned that off, but the
alarm still kept sounding. I was mad now, so I smashed the
thing with a hammer.
The alarm still kept sounding!
When I finally woke up to the sound of my own alarm clock I'd
overslept by more than an hour. That's kind of like the guy
that dreamt he ate a five pound marshmallow only to find his
pillow half devoured when he woke up.

WEBMASTER TIP - Zippety Linky Do
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: I made a zip file for people to download but I don't
know how to link to it so they can grab it. Help?
Simon Says: It's so easy many newer webmasters overlook the
obvious. You link to other files types the same way you link
to an HTML page, using the anchor tag. Example:
<.a href="BunchaStuff.zip">Download a Buncha Stuff<./a>
Instead of linking to "SomePage.html" you just link to the
name of your file, BunchaStuff.zip in this example, and in-
clude the proper extension. This works for fonts, PDF files,
and every other kind of file as far as I know.
With a Zip file, the user will be prompted whether to save it
or open it; with a PDF file, Acrobat Reader will open if it's
installed; with executable files the user will be prompted
whether to save it or run it, and so on.
See, wasn't that easy?

COMPUTER TIPS - Real Time
My computer does something funny that no other computer I've
ever owned has done. It gains time. About 10 minutes every
month or so. My wall clock loses time. As they say, a man with
two watches never knows the correct time.
When you're online, you can find the correct and exact time
for any of the North American time zones simply by clicking
your state on this US map:
http://www.time.gov/
This is the official government time.
I didn't forget you if you don't live in the United States.
You can download Atomic TimeSync for free from Analog X and
have your computer sync up automatically once the program is
set up. If course, if you live in the US you can download it
too.

and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to follow
this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your choice.

Until next week, ponder these words of Albert Gyorgyi:
Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and
thinking what nobody has thought.
