Ouch. I raked so many leaves this past weekend that even my
fingers hurt. Sew if eye make uh lot of spelling missed aches
ewe no why.
Seriously though, there are no kids around to hire for raking
leaves, mowing lawns, or doing other chores I did as a youth,
at least not in my neighborhood. They're inside with their
Playstations and computer games, or being hauled off to soccer
or baseball practice, or whatever the fun of the day is...but
few seem to be learning the connection between work and reward.
I think that's a big mistake. Children who have everything
given to them and done for them grow up with unrealistic
expectations and often lack the self-discipline to succeed.
Be kind to your kids and teach them the wholesome values you
were probably taught when you were young, like earning your
way in life, or you put their future at risk.

WEBMASTER TIP - Marquee This
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs.
If you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it
won't work.
Question: I saw some scrolling text on a page and looked at
the source code. It seems to be caused by a MARQUEE tag. My
HTML editor doesn't have that built into it. Is my editor
really out of date, or is this so new that none would have
it?
Simon Says: The MARQUEE tag isn't new, it's a very old pro-
prietary tag that never caught on. For most of it's existence,
the tag was only supported by Internet Explorer, but it's
now supported by Netscape 7 as well. Because it's not an
"official" HTML tag is why your HTML editor doesn't offer it
as an option, but you can always add it to your page by hand.
It's most often used to draw attention to a message you want
to be sure your visitors read. It's okay to use it, but don't
rely on it because it may never be supported by all browsers.
Below are the properties you can use with the MARQUEE tag.
width: sets how wide (in pixels) the scrolling area will be
Example: width="300"
height: sets how tall (in pixels) the marquee area will be
Example: height="50"
direction: determines which direction the text will scroll
Example: direction="right"
Possible Values: left or right
behavior: determines how the content will move
Example: behavior="scroll"
Possible Values: scroll, slide, alternate
scrolldelay: sets the scroll speed (in milliseconds)
Example: scrolldelay="500" (default value = 85)
scrollamount: sets the distance (in pixels) between movements
Example: scrollamount="15" (default value = 6)
loop: sets how many times the marquee should loop
Example: loop="5" (dafault value = infinite)
bgcolor: sets the background color
Example: bgcolor="green"
hspace: sets the amount of empty horizontal space around the
marquee
Example: hspace="15"
vspace: sets the amount of empty vertical space around the
marquee
Example: vspace="22"
The text color will be whatever the default text color of
your page is, but if you'd like to change the text color you
can do so with CSS.
Example: style="color: white"
That would give you white text inside the marquee. Here's a
marquee tag with a few of the example properties included:
<.marquee width="300" height="50" scrolldelay="33" scrollamount="9"
bgcolor="#88db73" style="color: yellow">This text will scroll
within the defined area.<./marquee>
You can also use many HTML tags within the marquee. I could
have left off the style tag and changed the text color using
a font tag between the opening and closing marquee tags. I
could have also added bold or italic tags there, changed font
sizes, etc.
There you go, a marquee to mark your markup.

SURFIN' THE WEB - GarageBand
At GarageBand you can discover some excellent music you
probably wouldn't find anywhere else. Many of the artists
have CD's for sale, and many provide free and legal MP3
downloads of at least some of their songs. You also get to
hear the full song...unlike many music sites that only give
you a 30 second song sample.
My only complaint is that the pop-up music player doesn't
have a volume control. Because the artists upload their own
music, some are much louder than others so you need to keep
your computer's volume control handy when playing.
With genres from Acoustic to World Trance, and 45 categories
in between, if you can't find a lot of good music you like
here, well, you're just not trying.

COMPUTER TIPS - Sluggish System and Startup Programs
If your computer seems sluggish, but wasn't always that way,
it may have something to do how many programs start up with
your computer. If there are a lot of icons in your system
tray, that may be the problem. All those icons represents
programs that are running, whether you need them to or not.
In addition to slowing your system down, programs running in
your system tray can contribute to frequent lockup problems,
illegal operation errors, software installation problems,
and difficulty in running some software.
Follow the steps below to keep unneeded programs from starting
up when your computer starts up.
1) Click the Start button and select Run.
2) Type: msconfig
...into the text input box and click OK.
3) When the System Configuration Utility opens, click the
Startup tab.
Note: Not all Windows systems have the System Configuration
Utility installed. If yours doesn't, you may want to check out
Startup Control Panel: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
4) On the Startup tab you'll see a listing of programs that
start up with your computer. Uncheck the programs you don't
want to load on bootup and click Apply.
--- WARNING!!! ---
When msconfig opens you'll probably see several programs you
don't recognize. Exercising CAUTION when deselecting items to
stop from booting up with your computer. Programs like "Scan
Registry" and "DSentry" and "System tray" shouldn't be messed
with -- only uncheck what you know to be non-essential soft-
ware, like Real Player or Acrobat Assistant. Unchecking them
doesn't remove the program and it doesn't mean the programs
won't work, it will just take a little longer for them to
start up if you do need to use them.
One final note: perform this tip at your own risk. It is
possible to cause serious problems by disabling something
critical.
