WEBMASTER TIP - Making The Border
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: I have a small image that I'd like to use as a left
border style background. When I added it to the body tag it
tiled on the whole page (of course) and that won't do. Is
there a way with HTML to make it into a border background,
or do I have to get image editing software? I'm not very good
with complicated programs.
Simon Says: Of course, a person could use a graphics editor to
make it into a left border background, but there is another way
so you don't have to obtain and learn to use a graphics editor.
It can't be done with just HTML, but it can be done with CSS.
Here's the code:
<.style type="text/css">
BODY {background-image:url(images/stone.jpg);
background-repeat:repeat-y}
<./style>
Place that into the HEAD section of your HTML document or into
your linked style sheets. The only part you have to change is
the part in parenthesis (but do not replace the parenthesis,
they are necessary), change that to your own image path and
name. If you change repeat-y to repeat-x it will make it a top
border background.
If you'd like a new source for original graphics, my cousin
is in the process of building a new graphics site. It's not
finished yet, so some intended page are missing. Don't email
him about the missing pages, he knows his site isn't done.
Just pretend you're getting a sneak preview, because you are!

SURFIN' THE WEB - Top 50 Most Influential Albums
Everyone likes music, right?
The Observer, which I guess is part of the Guardian Unlimited,
a UK newspaper, has attempted to rate the top 50 albums that
changed the course of music. Do you want to know what their
number one most influential album of all time is, according to
their panel of experts?
The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967)
I wouldn't have picked that. You'll have to go to their web site
to see the other 49 albums. You'll probably agree with some, but
perhaps not most. You may even find some you'll wish were never
recorded!

SOFTWARE SPOTLIGHT - MicroAntiVirus
A few weeks ago I was researching information for the Oddball
Wall column in this newsletter when I clicked a link the
search engine brought up, and the web site tried to install
a virus on my computer. Fortunately, my antivirus program
caught it and saved my system from becoming infected.
Anyone who isn't using an antivirus program and updating it
daily is really taking a risk these days. A virus can do
anything from being little more than a grinding annoyance to
stealing data from your PC to breaking it. Most of us have
to pay to have it repaired, and some repairs can be more
expensive than a low-end, brand new PC costs.
It's just silly to take chances when the prevention is so much
more affordable than the cure. MicroAntiVirus is one of the
best, but it does a lot more than just guard against viruses.
It can removes viruses automatically, but it also:
» Protects Against Adware And Spyware
» Protects email & instant messages
» Defends against emerging threats
» Has hostile Activity Detection
» Has automatic File Protection
» Has 24/7 Customer Support
» Firewall Software
» Spyware Remover
» Adware Remover
» Popup Blocker
They also offer unlimited antivirus updates, and I update my
program daily. As the saying goes, my mother didn't raise no
fool.
Word to the Wise: You might want to hurry, if it isn't too
late already, but at the time of this writing there was a
special sale going on with the product marked down almost
45% off. There is no better time than right now!

THE ODDBALL WALL - Minty Words
On this day in 1837, a US Mint opened in Charlotte, NC. Exactly
seven years later, on this day in 1844, fire destroyed that
Mint. That's the most interesting thing that happened on this
day, and I can't very well make a good quiz from that, so I'm
featuring a vocabulary builder quiz again. But hey, wouldn't
you love to have a coin or two minted at that mint that only
produced money for seven years? I'll bet any money minted there
is worth...a mint!
Okay, you over that bad joke yet? Pick the word that best describes
the meaning given:
1) poor enough to need help from others
a. squazzle-bottomed b. melancholy c. indigent
2) an event that seems arranged although it was really accidental

a. banal b. arduous c. portentous
4) marking the beginning of a new era

COMPUTER TIPS - Adjust Desktop Icon Spacing
Only so many icons fit in each auto-arranged column on your
desktop. The number varies, depending on your display
resolution, but at a resolution set to 800 by 600 pixels on
my computer, 7 icons fit on each column. There are two ways
you can fit more icons into each column without changing your
resolution.
1) Adjust your icon spacing:
a. Right-click the desktop and select Properties.
b. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Appearance
tab,
c. Click the Advanced button.
d. Click the down arrow under Item and select vertical Icon
Spacing.
e. Decrease the Size.
Now just click OK then Apply to see the result. Repeat these
steps until you like what you see and click OK to keep the change.
2) Adjust your icon size:
a. Follow the above procedure through step (c).
b. Click the down arrow under Item and select Icon.
c. Decrease the size.
Note: If you're not using Windows XP you may have options of just
selecting small icons or large icons. The location for selecting
these options, I think, is found by right-clicking the task bar
and choosing properties. Don't hold me to that though, it's been
a long time since I've used any other operating system than XP.
Disclaimer: Advice in this column is presented as informational
and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to follow
this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your choice.

Until next week, ponder these words of D.M. Thomas: Her hearing
was keener than his, and she heard silences he was unaware of.
Have an interesting day, Simon
