WEBMASTER TIP - Low Source Images
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs.
If you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it
won't work.
Question: One friend of mine said I should use a "low source"
image with my large images, another says I shouldn't - what
do you think?
Simon Says: To tell you the truth, it doesn't make much
difference whether you use it or not. The low source image
attribute is a proprietary Netscape code attribute, so for
the overwhelming majority of your visitors, their browser
will ignore this attribute.
However, if you want your page to validate, don't use it.
Since it isn't an official code standard any page using a
low source attribute and value will fail validation.
For those that don't know, the low source attribute and value
allows you to add a low quality image source to an image tag
so that the low source image will load first before the real,
higher quality image you want to display is loaded, thus giving
the appearance of your page loading faster. When the higher
quality image is fully downloaded, it replaces the low source
image...but as I said, only in Netscape.
In truth, it takes longer for your page to load because all the
regular information has to download, plus the low source image.
I never use this attribute and value, but if you want to, just
add:
lowsrc="image.jpg"
...to a regular image tag. Replace "image.jpg" with the name
and file type of your low source image. Include the path to
the image if it isn't kept in the same folder as the page you
use it on.

Personally, I don't care much for fiction, but my wife loves

THE ODDBALL WALL - King of the Blues
On this day in 1992, blues singer and guitarist Albert King
died at age 71. Man, I didn't even know he was sick. Since
I love the blues, including Albert's fine guitarmanship,
todays quiz is about blues music. If you're not an aficionado
like me, don't worry, I'll try to keep it fairly easy...for

COMPUTER TIPS - Word Tip
Two vulnerabilities have recently been identified with
Microsoft Word that could potentially allow a hacker to gain
control of your computer. The two vulnerability exploits have
a severity rating of critical, which is as high as it gets.
Microsoft will most likely offer a patch to fix these problems,
but since they seldom post security updates independent of
their regular critical updates schedule, these vulnerabilities
will likely remain a threat until the next scheduled update in
January.
It's quite easy to avoid these vulnerabilities since Word
documents have to be opened manually. Since the two most
likely ways to get ahold of an infected Word document is to
download it via email or the web, just don't open any Word
documents from sources you don't know or explicitly trust
until Microsoft offers the security patch necessary to fix
the problem.
