WEBMASTER TIP - Low Source Images
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs.
If you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it
won't work.
Question: One friend of mine said I should use a "low source"
image with my large images, another says I shouldn't - what
do you think?
Simon Says: To tell you the truth, it doesn't make much
difference whether you use it or not. The low source image
attribute is a proprietary Netscape code attribute, so for
the overwhelming majority of your visitors, their browser
will ignore this attribute.
However, if you want your page to validate, don't use it.
Since it isn't an official code standard any page using a
low source attribute and value will fail validation.
For those that don't know, the low source attribute and value
allows you to add a low quality image source to an image tag
so that the low source image will load first before the real,
higher quality image you want to display is loaded, thus giving
the appearance of your page loading faster. When the higher
quality image is fully downloaded, it replaces the low source
image...but as I said, only in Netscape.
In truth, it takes longer for your page to load because all the
regular information has to download, plus the low source image.
I never use this attribute and value, but if you want to, just
add:
lowsrc="image.jpg"
...to a regular image tag. Replace "image.jpg" with the name
and file type of your low source image. Include the path to
the image if it isn't kept in the same folder as the page you
use it on.

SURFIN' THE WEB - The Mystery Reader
Personally, I don't care much for fiction, but my wife loves
a good mystery. The Mystery Reader provides a review of all
kinds of mystery themed books, from the eclectic to traditional
thrillers.
The reviews present a short synopsis of the book, a brief
commentary on the books plusses and minuses, and rates the
novels on a five star system. Great site for mystery lovers.

THE ODDBALL WALL - King of the Blues
On this day in 1992, blues singer and guitarist Albert King
died at age 71. Man, I didn't even know he was sick. Since
I love the blues, including Albert's fine guitarmanship,
todays quiz is about blues music. If you're not an aficionado
like me, don't worry, I'll try to keep it fairly easy...for
the most part. ;)
1) This man is one of most famous bluesmen in the world, and
was awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom on December 7th of
this year for his cultural contributions to society. Who is
this man known as the King of the Blues?

Musselwhite
2) The previous question was almost a gimmie, the man is so
famous, but what is the name he gave to his famous guitar?
a. Lucille b. Slinky c. Delores
3) Another famous old bluesman is McKinley Morganfield, but
he's better known by his nickname? What is his nickname?
a. Muddy Waters b. Blind Lemon c. Howling Wolf
4) This guitarist's broad appeal made him one of America's
most influential electric blues guitarists in his time, but
he died much too young in a helicopter crash in Wisconsin in
1990. His brother is also a famous blues guitar player name
Jimmie who has a Fender production guitar name after him.
Who is this excellent guitar player?

friend Van Morrison. Who is this bluesman whose musical
career spanned over 50 years?

6) This blues and rock legend is widely revered as one of
the best living guitarists in the world. His brother, also
a musician, is named Edgar, and both he and Edgar are
albinos. His latest disc, "I'm A Bluesman," was nominated
for a Grammy. Who is it?
a. Leslie West b. Johnny Winter c. Roy Buchanon

before, but this one received the 2005 Phenomenal Woman of
the Year Award for her blues stylings and community service.
Who is she?
a. Etta James b. Koko Taylor c. Bonnie Raitt
8) Another "Queen of the Blues," this woman was one of the
first black musicians to cut a record. When "Down Hearted
Blues" sold two million records the first year of its release,
her future in the blues was assured. Known as a tough, fist-
fighting woman, she'd fight with men or women, she was the
highest paid black entertainer of her time. Who is this fist-
fighting, hardscrabble blues woman?
a. Bessie Smith b. Memphis Minnie c. Billie Holliday
And now for one that's sure to have you singing the blues...
9) Rolling Stone magazine called this song, written by Robert

COMPUTER TIPS - Word Tip
Two vulnerabilities have recently been identified with
Microsoft Word that could potentially allow a hacker to gain
control of your computer. The two vulnerability exploits have
a severity rating of critical, which is as high as it gets.
Microsoft will most likely offer a patch to fix these problems,
but since they seldom post security updates independent of
their regular critical updates schedule, these vulnerabilities
will likely remain a threat until the next scheduled update in
January.
It's quite easy to avoid these vulnerabilities since Word
documents have to be opened manually. Since the two most
likely ways to get ahold of an infected Word document is to
download it via email or the web, just don't open any Word
documents from sources you don't know or explicitly trust
until Microsoft offers the security patch necessary to fix
the problem.
Disclaimer: Advice in this column is presented as informational
and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to follow
this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your choice.

Until next week, ponder these words of Cathy Better: Life is
raw material. We are artisans. We can sculpt our existence
into something beautiful, or debase it into ugliness. It's in
our hands.
Have an interesting day, Simon
