I don't know about where you live, but here the political ads
for the next election are showing up in full force. Here are
my thoughts on modern politics:
~ Politics should be about right or wrong, not right or left.
~ Choices in leadership are so poor I more often seem to be
voting against someone rather than voting for someone. That
sucks.
~ There are too many Democrats and Republicans in office...and
not enough Americans.
~ We jail the stupid criminals, and re-elect the smart criminals.
~ I don't believe anything a politician says...until he or she
denies it.
Yeah, you get the picture, I don't like politics, I don't like
politicians, and I don't like what the political process has
devolved into. I agree with Plato, "Mankind will never see an
end of trouble until lovers of wisdom come to hold political
power, or the holders of power become lovers of wisdom."

WEBMASTER TIP - Targeting Links from Pop-up Window
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: How can I have links in a pop up menu open the pages
in the main browser window?
Simon Says: The first thing you have to do is name the main
page using JavaScript.
<.script type="text/JavaScript"> self.name = "home"; <./script>
Just paste that into your main page somewhere, with the main
page being the page the pop-up menu is launched from. You can
change the name "home" to any name you want.
Then add a link on your pop-up menu page like this:
Your Page
This will load "your_page.html" back in the main browser window.
If you want to have other links in the pop-up menu to continue
to load into the main browser window, you'll have to place that
first part of the code on each page or else the target "home"
won't be found. If you change the name "home" in step one, you'll
need to change the target name to the same name in step two.
There you go, pop that only goes flat when your visitor's have
a JavaScript incapable browser.

They call them myths, I'd call them old wives tales. You might
call them Fred...if you're silly. By any name, you can learn
the truth behind these mythical old Freds:
Can a chicken really live without a head? Is a dog's mouth
really cleaner than a human's? Do humans really only use 10
percent of their brain? Is chicken soup really good for you
when you have a cold?
Learn the answer to these and other mystifying questions at
Live Science, then explore the rest of this marvelous web
site. Hint: try some of the photo galleries.

COMPUTER TIPS - LightScribe
If you're used to labeling your home-burned CD's with stick-on
labels you'll probably be interested in LightScribe. My son-
in-law's new computer came with LightScribe technology and it
represents a nice step forward in home CD recording.
With LightScribe, once you burn your CD you just flip it over
and burn the label. Lasers activate specials dyes inside the
CD to create a professional looking label. The special CD's
are price competitive with normal recordable CD's and can be
purchases in most home office or tech stores such as Office
Depot and Staples.
LightScribe is a Hewlett-Packard technology. It comes standard
on many new Hewlett-Packard computers, or you can purchase the
LightScribe writer separately.
The CD's my son-in-law made look great, totally professional.
It's on my Christmas wish list, and my wife better be paying
attention!
Disclaimer: Advice in this column is presented as informational
and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to follow
this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your choice.

Until next week, ponder these words of Plato: Those who are too
smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by
those who are dumber.
Have an interesting day, Simon
