Tom is good friend, but he's on the phone a LOT. I tease him
about it sometimes. Last Thursday he tells me I may be right
that he's on the phone too much. I asked why, and he said the
phone rang on TV and he picked up his own phone to answer it.
Next he admitted that a while ago, while on the phone again,
he put his pencil behind his ear as is his habit, but in a
few seconds started to smell something burning - then felt
pain!
He accidently put his lit cigarette behind his ear instead of
his pencil. Tom is a good egg. Slightly cracked, but a good
egg.
With friends like Tom, I'll always have things to write about.

WEBMASTER TIP - Image Bullets for Lists
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs.
If you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it
won't work.
Question: How do they make lists that use images instead of
normal disks for bullet points?
Simon Says: This seems like a good question to entertain after
coming of the mini-series of tutorials covering the basics of
CSS.
Using CSS to format an unordered list has some interesting
options. You can set an image as the list marker instead of
using "fake" lists in order to use images as the marker. You
can also position the bullets as inside or outside.
What does it mean to set the list marker to the inside or
outside? Aw, come on, where's your sense of adventure? Just
try it out both ways to see for yourself instead of begging
me for the easy answer!
Here's the code you'd paste into the HEAD section of your
page to create a bulleted list using images instead of a disk
as the marker:
<.style type="text/css">
<.!--
ul {list-style: circle inside url("images/daisy.gif")}
-->
In the above code, the list would use an image called
daisy.gif that was located in your images folder. I also
specified a circle bullet for browsers that do not support
image bullets. Instead of a circle, you could also specify
a square or a disk. Instead of inside, you can specify out-
side.
You'd then code your unordered list in the usual manner. And
that, is the gist of a list with CSS.

SURFIN' THE WEB - GoToQuiz
This is a fun site. You can take quizzes other Internet users
have created or make up your own quizzes. The quiz topics are
as diverse as the users. You can also take or create surveys
and polls that you can put on your own web site. I made one
and had my cousin put it on his fine web site. Here's the
links:

COMPUTER TIPS - Internet Explorer Shortcuts
Despite my dislike for most things Microsoft, Internet Explorer
is by far the most popular browser on the planet. So, here are
a few IE shortcuts and tips I find extremely useful.
- To search for a particular word or phrase on a web page just
press CTRL + F to open the Find dialog.
- Hold down the shift key when you click a link to have it
open in a new window. If you know you're coming back to the
same page, a new window is faster to open and close than back-
tracking pages.
- Hit the Backspace key on your keyboard to go back a page,
or press ALT + the Left Arrow. ALT + the Right Arrow goes
forward a page, and ALT + Home take you to your home page.
- Hit the Spacebar to jump down the page one screen length.
Hold the shift key down as you press the Spacebar to jump UP
the page. Use the Up and Down Arrows to scroll slower.
- In IE 5.5, in most cases you can just type "domain_Name.com"
instead of typing the "www" first. IE knows to search for it
on the web. Works for most sites, but a few can't be found
without the www - that's a server issue, not an IE issue.
- CTRL + O opens the dialog to type in a web address. Useful
for full screen mode surfers like me.
- Press the F11 key to open your browser into full screen mode.
This is the way I always surf, and with the mini-tool bar
hidden too. Press it again to leave full screen mode.
- Right-click the tool bar and select Auto-hide. This hides
the tool bar for true full screen surfing. To use the hidden
tool bar, just move your mouse to the top edge of the screen.
Move your mouse away and it disappears again.
PS: You can do this with your taskbar too, by clicking the
Start button, pointing to settings, and clicking Taskbar &
Start Menu. Then place a check by the Autohide feature and
click Apply.
- Press the F5 key to reload the page. Press F4 & F5 at the
same time to have the page reloaded at the page top instead
of wherever you had scrolled to.
- Press the Esc key to stop the current page from loading.
- Press CTRL + N to open the current page in a new window.
All the usual shortcuts work as well. CTRL + P opens the print
dialog, CTRL + A highlights everything on the page, CTRL + C
copies what you have highlighted.
Pressing Control, F1, F7, Page Up, Del, A, 9, X, Tab, and Caps
Lock all at the same time, and then clicking your heels together
while blowing your nose doesn't do a darn thing. Rats eh? I know
you wanted to try that real bad.

Until next week, ponder these words of Mark Caine: The first
step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive
of the environment in which you first find yourself.
