I was at a child's birthday party last weekend when one of the
little rascals came up to me and said, "Are you Santa Claus?"
I was surprised, but I do have a beard, and it's got a little
white in it, and I am a little overweight...so one could argue
that it was an easy mistake.
However, I'm not Santa Claus overweight, my beard is still
mostly black and it's trimmed short and neat, and I don't wear
red suits and funny hats - so I quickly determined someone must
have put the little dickens up to it.
I answered, "Why yes I am, and if you tell me who told you to
ask me that, I'll make sure you get lots of extra presents for
Christmas.
"Daddy," he answered.
Ha! Now if daddy wants this little 5 or 6 year old to keep
believing in Santa Claus, he'd better come up with some extra
presents! :)

WEBMASTER TIP - I Framed You
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: I saw a web site with a scrolling hole in the page.
How is that done?
Simon Says: A scrolling hole, huh? I've never heard it called
that, but I suspect you're referring to an inline frame.
For those that don't know, an inline frame, or iframe for
short, is like a little window you can place on your page that
can have other pages load inside the frame without needing to
reload the entire page.
First, let's make an iframe:

In the first line of code, where you see: src="iframe.html"
...this is the page you want to have load in the iframe when
the main page first loads. The page in the iframe doesn't have
to be named iframe.html, it can be named anything. It could be
a text file too, it doesn't have to be an HTML file.
In the second line of code, notice that I gave the iframe a
name (name="#coolwhip"). This is important because the name
becomes the link target. The name can be anything. I chose
coolwhip in honor of a friend who gets a kick out of little
touches like that. (Hi Shan) The name must prefaced with a
pound sign (#), that's what tells the browser the link target
is on the same page as the link. Note that the first two
lines are both part of the opening iframe tag and could be
all placed on one line in your source code, but I had to place
it on two lines for this ezine format.
In the third line of code, you see a link. That is for older
browsers that can't display the iframe. Rather than an iframe,
the link is displayed so users can click the link to read the
content you are displaying in the iframe.
For some, that's all they need an iframe for, to display a lot
of information in a small space. Others may want to have links
open inside the iframe. Here's how to code a link so it opens
in the iframe:

It's as simple as adding the target to a regular link. So there
you go, you've been framed, iframed you. Hardy har har.
Iframes are supported by Internet Explorer 3 and later, Netscape
6 and later, and Opera 4 and later, and Firefox (not sure which
versions). If you use any other browser, you must be used to
figuring out what works on your own by now. :)

COMPUTER TIPS - IE 7
For those that use Internet Explorer to browse the web, IE 7
is not available. Even you use another browser, if you have
a Windows operating system, you may want to upgrade IE to
version 7 even if you don't use it. Why? It has security
upgrades that will help protect your operating system better.
