- Software Spotlight: World Wind
- The Oddball Wall: Football!
- Computer Tip: Spare Parts
A friend of mine, Mike, owns his own computer repair shop.
He told me he was called to a house a few weeks back because
a man couldn't get his computer to boot up.
When Mike arrived he pushed the power button and nothing
happened. The first thing he always checks is to make sure
the computer is plugged in. He checked the plug, and it was
plugged into a power strip.
Then he found the problem. The man had plugged the power
strip into the power strip instead of the wall outlet! That
little mistake cost the customer $60.00, the minimum price
for on-site service.

WEBMASTER TIP - Highlighting Words
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: I saw a site that had words highlighted, like you'd
do with a yellow marker on paper. How'd they do that,
highlighting one word?
Simon Says: They did that with CSS. The highlight, which is
really just a background color for one or more words, can be
any color you choose, it doesn't have to be yellow.
Highlighting text is great for emphasizing important words or
points in your message. I use it on several sites of my own,
especially to draw attention to important sales points or
special instructions.
Just add this code to the HEAD section of your HTML page:
<.style type="text/css">
.HL {background: #ffff99;
color: #000000;}
<./style>
What you've done is create a CSS class, and now the table is
set. To use it to highlight a text passage, you could write:
<.font class="HL">this is highlighted
The words "this is highlighted" will have a yellow background
with black text. Of course, you can change those colors to
anything you want by changing the colors in the CSS code.
You can also use that class in other places, such as with a
heading tag:
Most people agree, unless they don't.
Now your heading will be highlighted. That's what we like
around here, lightheaded highs...I mean, highlighted heads...
aw shucks, you know what I mean.

What's your opinion on Golf?
It seems like you either love it or just don't understand
the attraction. This hilarious DVD explores a golfers
infatuation with driving, chipping, putting and all things
golf related.
You won't believe the ridiculous ways golfers obsess over
the sport. Of the 60 million golfers worldwide, only a handful
are really good, which begs the question: "Why do the rest of
us even bother?"
This makes a wonderful gift for any golf nut. Even if you don't
love the game, this is one funny DVD. And at the reduced price
of just $12.99 (a savings of $7.00), you've got to get it.

COMPUTER TIPS - Spare Parts
Computer peripherals don't last forever, especially cheap ones!
Keyboards and mice seem to wear out at the most inopportune
times and you certainly need them to operate your computer.
They're also very cheap to purchase, so why not keep a spare
keyboard and mouse on-hand for those times when one of them
dies and goes to that big hard drive in the sky?
You don't need a top of the line keyboard or mouse for a spare.
You can get a cheap keyboard and mouse for under $25.00 if you
shop around, and sometimes quite a bit less if you watch for
sales or buy used ones. At our local college they open the
doors to the public every Friday to sell off old equipment
they no longer have use for. They always seem to have used
keyboards there for $2.00 - $5.00.
That's pretty cheap insurance against having one of these parts
give out at a time when you need it and the stores aren't open
or you don't really have the time to spare to go shopping.

and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any decisions to
follow this advice is your responsibility. Your computer, your
choice.
