From the strange but true files...
One of my wife's clients was telling her that when she was at
a busy restaurant the other night, the wine was getting to her
and her girdle was too. Feeling less inhibited from the wine
about her extra girth, she asked for a doggie back and went
to the ladies room and removed her girdle, placing it in the
doggie bag and placing that on the floor by her chair when she
returned to her table.
Later that evening when she got home, she opened her doggie
bag and found a piece of fish. She figured someone at the
table behind her got an even bigger surprise when they got
home and found her girdle.

WEBMASTER TIP - Get Off The Border
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs.
If you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it
won't work.
Question: I want to use a left border background on my site,
but I can't figure out how to keep the page content off of
the border area. The tutorials I've seen show to use a table,
but I'm not good with tables and I've read some things
against using tables too. Is there another (easier!) way?
Simon Says: There are two different ways besides using tables.
The oldest is known as the single-pixel gif trick. Basically,
you place a transparent gif comprised of one pixel on the left
edge of the page and set it to however wide and high you need.
Since it's transparent, nothing shows so there's no image
degradation, and having it only one pixel by one pixel in
size assures it download fast and can be used at different
sizes for each page.
That's the old-fashioned way of doing it, there is a better
way now using CSS. Just add the following to the HEAD section
of your page:
<.style type="text/css">
body {margin-left: 160 px;}
<./style>
Of course, you'll need to adjust the width to fit your left
border image. If you already know enough about CSS to be
using a linked style sheet, just add the middle line to your
code, or if you already have a body tag in your linked style
sheet, just add the margin-left to it.
You can also set the other page margins in the same way. In
addition to margin-left, use: margin-top, margin-right,
margin-bottom, and margin-left ...in that order.
Or, just use: margin: 160px
...to set all page margins the same.

featured slot for the duration of the following week.
There is some pretty decent artwork here, but don't ask me
how to pronounce 5oup or what it means - maybe Soup.com was
taken.

COMPUTER TIPS - PC TV
After last weeks lengthy computer tip, this week will be a
short one, and a rather different one at that.
How would you like to be able to watch over 200 satellite TV
channels on your PC from around the world? How would you like
no recurring fees for that privilege?
The stations come from almost 100 different countries, in-
cluding the USA, UK, Vatican City, France, Germany, Israel,
Netherlands, Spain, Australia, and every continent out there,
with over 80% of them in the English language.
I have to admit, I'm not much of a TV watcher so I haven't
tried this, but for those of you that enjoy television, I
thought I'd be remiss if I didn't pass this on to you. If
you have questions, consult the FAQ page on the web site.

Until next week, ponder these words of Marcus Aurelius:
Nowhere can man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat
than in his own soul.
Have an interesting day, Simon
