- Software Spotlight: IcoFX
- The Oddball Wall: Farewell
- Computer Tip: File Duplication
The first issue of The Internet Tutor was published in
December of 2000. Dubbed The Nutty Net Tutor back then, it
was started by my cousin, Dennis Gaskill (aka Boogie Jack),
and has been faithfully delivered every Thursday since.
As they say, all good things must end someday, and unfor-
tunately, this is the final issue of The Internet Tutor.
However, in order to keep providing you with quality
material GopherCentral.com will be merging this list with
their 'Gizmorama' publication.
Gizmo is a daily newsletter which will keep you up to date
on the latest info on software and high tech gear. Fun news
on all kinds of gadgets and gizmos! It also includes the
bonus subscription to Gizmo Video Clip of the Week.
If you do not want to receive this new email please make
sure to scroll to the bottom of this page and unsubscribe
now. This will keep you from being added to the list.
As a final note to my die-hard fans, please be sure to read
The Oddball Wall today for final comments and a special
invitation. The Oddball Wall was designed to give Dennis
one column where he could write about anything he wanted to
write about rather than being boxed into a specific topic
as with the other four columns.

WEBMASTER TIP - Text Indentation
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: How do I indent the first line of paragraphs so my
web page stories appear like the text of a book?
Simon Says: This is done with style sheets. Add the following
code to the HEAD section of your page or the middle line of
that code to an external style sheet:
<.style type="text/css">
p {text-indent: 12px;}
<./style>
You can change the 12px (12 pixels) to any reasonable size.
With this code in the HEAD section of your page or in your
external style sheet the first line following a <.p> tag will
be indented by the number of pixels you specify.

SURFIN' THE WEB - Music Map
I'm a big music lover. Unfortunately, the music I prefer is
seldom heard on the local stations in my area, so any tool
I can use to find artists I've never heard of that play the
kind of music I like is a great tool for me.
Music Map is one such tool. You simply type in the name of
a band or artist and it creates a "map" of names. The names
are of other bands and artists that other people like who
also liked the band or artist you entered. The closer other
names are on the map to the name you entered, the closer the
relationship is supposed to be.
On my first try I found a handful of musical talent that I
didn't know about but liked when I checked out some of their
music on Amazon. Follow up tries yielded the same results.
It's hard to figure out some of the musical relationships,
but it's a good tool for discovering artists you weren't
aware of that you will like.

THE ODDBALL WALL - Farewell
As I wrote in the opening comments, this is the last issue of
The Internet Tutor. On the behalf of NextEra media, myself,
and Boogie Jack, I want to thank you for being a subscriber.
If you'd like to continue to receive web design tips in your
Inbox, I suggest you subscribe to my cousin's award-winning
ezine, Almost a Newsletter. Nobody does it quite like Boogie
Jack. You can subscribe on his front page:
http://www.BoogieJack.com
Since he was the creator of this ezine, he wanted to do some-
thing special for all the subscribers. His Inner Circle members
site features web design tips, online webmaster utilities and
code generators, computer tips, exclusive fonts, free software
and much more. The Inner Circle version of his Almost a News-
letter features discounted software from a variety of software
vendors.
For a limited time, he's offering Internet Tutor subscribers
a 25% discount to his exclusive Inner Circle. You can learn
more about it here: http://www.htmlville.com/join.shtml
To get the discount, just order as usual but in the text box
where it asks for a "Discount Coupons Redemption Code" enter:
LastIssue
...and you'll receive a whopping 25% off your membership. That
is the biggest discount he's ever offered and ever will offer,
but that isn't all. He's rebuilding the members site on its
own domain. You'll have access to the old members site until
the new site is open, but he won't start counting down your
membership period until the new site is officially open for
business. You'll get several months of free membership time!
It's been a pleasure writing for you. I've hope you've gotten
as much pleasure reading each issue as I have writing it.
"Each day is your canvas. You are the artist. Paint a master-
piece on as many days as you can and your life will become a
work of art." ~ Dennis Gaskill
My cousin writes lots of gems like that in Almost a Newsletter,
but that's one of my favorites quotes of his. Almost a News-
letter is really much more than a newsletter. Besides the web
design he teaches (and he's written three books on the topic
that are used in hundreds of colleges as the teaching text),
it's a treasure trove of ideas to help everyone succeed in
life. Subscribe today, or better yet, join his Inner Circle.
Farewell my friends,
Simon

COMPUTER TIPS - File Duplication
Sometimes it's wise to make a duplicate copy of a file that
you want to edit so you have a backup file in case things
don't work out as expected. Most folks think they have to
place the copy in a different directory, but scattering
copies all over your system often isn't the best practice.
Instead, you can make a copy of a file and keep it in the
same directory simply by right-clicking the file in Explorer
and dragging it to another part of the same directory and
dropping it. Explorer will then present a list of options
for you to choose from. Select "Copy Here" and the file will
be copied to same directory.
If your file was named MyFile.txt, it will rename the file
as "Copy of MyFile.txt" and all is well.
Disclaimer: Advice in this column is presented as infor-
mational and is true to the best of my knowledge. Any
decisions to follow this advice is your responsibility.
Your computer, your choice.
------------------------------------------------------------
My last quotation for your consideration is these words of
Orison Swett Marden: The golden opportunity you are seeking
is in yourself. It is not in your environment; it is not in
luck or chance, or the help of others; it is in yourself
alone.
Make a good life for yourself, Simon
