The last question on the last test of the year in my 10th grade
art class was something like, "What's the first name of the man
who cleaned this room all year?"
One student who was a few questions ahead of me raised her hand
and asked the teacher if that question counted. I quickly
glanced ahead to the last question.
The teacher answered that it not only counted, but anyone that
got it right would get an "A" for the test regardless of how
well they did on the other questions.
The teacher went on to explain, "You'll meet a lot of people
in your life. Each one is equally important and deserves your
recognition. How far you go in life depends on how much
attention you pay to each person you meet. Never forget that."
I haven't forgotten...and by the end of the day everyone in
School knew the janitor's name was Harold.

WEBMASTER TIP - New Rules
Note: In code examples I add a period after each left arrow
bracket so the code can be viewed in all e-mail programs. If
you copy and paste, be sure to remove the periods or it won't
work.
Question: Is there any way to have horizontal rules that don't
look like stupid gray lines, without having to resort to using
images?
Simon Says: Sure, use CSS to define the appearance of the rules.
I've listed a few examples below.
Style 1:
<.hr style="background-color:blue; height: 7px; width: 400px;
border: solid black 1px;">
Style 2:
<.hr style="color: red; height: 1px; width: 400px;">
Style 3:
<.hr style="border: dashed green 1px; width: 400px; height: 3px;">
Style 4:
<.hr style="color: #B48185; height: 5px; width: 400px;
border-right: solid black 1px; border-bottom: solid black 1px;">
Style 5:
<.hr style="color: #4989CF; width: 400px; height: 7px; border:

If you paste those into a web page (removing the dot after each
left arrow bracket), you can see that by combining various
colors, styles, widths and heights you can create all kinds of
looks never before possible with code alone.
For the border style, in addition to "solid, dashed, and dotted"
as I've shown, you can use:
double, groove, ridge, inset, outset (and as previously shown:
dotted, dashed, solid)
You can even set a different border for each side of the rule
if you like, but replacing "border" with:
border-top, border-right, border-bottom, and border-left.
...and adding the "style" you want to it. Some of the border
styles won't work if the border is set to thin. If you can't
see it working, just increase the border size until you see
the difference.
That's it, McFrigglewiggles. I think you'd have to agree, this
tutorial rules! ;)

TASTE is an acronym for The Archive of Scientists' Transcendent
Experiences. Scientists have to be careful about what they say
or write that can't be proven because it can damage their
credibility and even ruin their career. Positing their beliefs
about things like life after death, spiritual matters, and other
esoteric matters that can't be scientifically proven have cost
more than one scientist his reputation.
At TASTE, scientist can say all they please anonymously, thereby
protecting their careers and reputations. It makes for some in-
teresting reading, but these guys aren't writers, so their words
often leave you wondering why they didn't finish their thoughts.
In some cases, it almost seems intentional...perhaps to make you
think.

COMPUTER TIPS - Disappearing Desktop Icons
In Windows XP you can make the icons on your desktop disappear
at will, no magic spell required. To lose the icons:
1) Right-click a blank area of your desktop
2) From the pop-up menu, point to "Arrange Icons By"
3) From the sub-menu, click "Show Desktop Icons" to remove the
checkmark.
That's it, the icons will disappear and you'll see a clean
desktop.
Just reverse the procedure to restore them.
