I'M NOT MARTHA - Tuesday, April 24, 2007
____________________________________________________________
Hi! I'm Lizzy!! and I'm not Martha!!!
* Hey Lizzy,
We read every letter you send out and learn so much. How
do you know all this stuff? What do you read? Online?
and on paper? Do you set aside time or just read when
you can like the rest of us? And do you snack while you
read?
Doris and Jim
Wow! no one has ever asked a question like this one. You
want to know what I consume, eh?.... food for thought.
I'll be delighted to share my reading list and my list of
lap snacks.
Reading list last... for all you foodies who need to be
coaxed into more reading we'll start with your delights
first. The most important thing to remember is no food
should hit the page or your keyboard!
Do you start the day with your local newspaper? I am
going too leave breakfast repasts to you. That's an
edition all in in itself. It's the other times of day
that I think you want to know about. I tend to read in
the afternoon and then after dinner...sometimes in bed.
I know, I know all the sleep doctors tell you to not
read in bed. Bed is for sleeping but I read in bed...ok?
(slightly defensive tone when you read that last sentence)
P.S. If you're interested we now have a forum. You can

HEALTHY THINGS
*I pull grapes off the stem and put them into a lovely,
sweet bowl, one that I like and treasure. I know it
sounds silly but for me the bowl is part of the pleasure.
If the bowl is special then the flavors taste better.
*The same goes for baby carrots and grapes tomatoes.
Love the taste of those sweet tomatoes.
*I mix almonds, the one with the skin, raisins and dried
cherries. Yummy!
*My favorite dry cereal can be a nice treat, too. Just
put some in that special bowl and nibble away.
SAVORY
I like special open face sandwiches. I use thin sliced
bread both white (whole wheat) and black bread. I top
them and then cut them into bite size nibblies. Here
are a few of my favorites:
I eat very little mayonnaise so when I do I want the real
stuff. I could make it but that would take much more
thought and effort than I am willing to put into it.
I get mayo made by "Delouis fils". I find it in the
refrigerator section of the gourmet shop. It is so
wonderful and as I say I eat so little of it mayo can
be part of the treat.
*Smoked Salmon on Black Bread
Spread the mayonnaise on the thin sliced black bread.
I like to put some fresh dill on top of it. Then a nice
slice of smoked salmon. Slice into bite sized pieces.
If I have them around I'll put a little caper on each
bite.
*Sliced Roast Beef and Scallion
Whichever bread you prefer. I mix the mayo with some
dijon mustard and spread on the bread. Place a slice
on the prepared bread. Cover with sliced scallion.
Cut the sandwich and serve.
* Cream Cheese and Smoked Oysters
This is very tasty. You'll be surprised. I use a plain
cracker that I have around. I wouldn't use one that has
a cheese flavor or a Ritz. The smoked oysters come in a
tin usually found around the tuna and anchovies in the
store. Drain the oysters and pat dry with a paper towel.
Place a 1/4 to 1/3 inch slice of cream cheese on each
cracker. Top that with a an oyster. If they are large
cut into half.
SWEET
*Grownup PB and J
I like the whole wheat bread toasted. Smear with you
favorite peanut butter. Slice into the bite sized pieces.
Now what to top it with? A slice of banana...or crumbled
bacon left over from breakfast...or honey...or whole fruit
preserves like strawberries. Just take the whole fruit
out and let the rest of the jelly drip off. Same hoes for
brandied fruit. My father liked a slice of sweet gherkin
pickle on his peanut butter.
* Brownie bites
This sounds toooo simple but I like it. I cut a brownie
into small pieces. Place them on a special plate with a
doily on it.
The little extras like a doily make the tiniest tidbit
taste like more. This goes for cookies out of the box or
little candies. I am a sucker for chocolate covered
almonds.
