Sen. Barack Obama's decision to break from his controversial
ex-pastor was hard but necessary, the wife of the Democratic
U.S. presidential hopeful says.
The campaign should be about issues, not remarks by the
Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Michelle Obama told CNN.
"I was proud of the statement he made. It was a tough thing
for him to do; it's a painful situation to be in," she said
of Obama's news conference Tuesday in which he said he was
"outraged" by Wright's most recent remarks on race and
America.
Obama, D-Ill., said Wright's remarks were the antithesis of
his beliefs and campaign message. Obama responded to
Wright's blistering comments ranging from the U.S.
government infecting people with AIDS to casting Nation of
Islam leader Louis Farrakhan in a positive light.
Obama has had to address his relationship with Wright for
months after videos of controversial sermons surfaced.
Now the Obama campaign will focus on issues such as the
economy and healthcare, Michelle Obama told CNN. She said
she believes Obama will win the presidential nomination.
"There's still an energy and a passion among his
supporters," Michelle Obama said. "And people are coming
on board every single day."
Is Michelle Obama right, voters need to move past Rev.
Jeremiah Wright's remarks?

Police: Hiker not injured, on drugs
Rescuers said a hiker who claimed to have broken his leg
while hiking in California's Santa Cruz Mountains only
thought he was injured because he was on drugs. They said
the 19-year-old hiker was rescued by a sheriff's K-9 unit
Monday night after calling his mother to tell her he was
stranded with a broken leg in the middle of the woods,
the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Sentinel reported Wednesday.
However, Capt. Bill Finch of the California Department of
Forestry and Fire Protection said the teenager only
believed his leg was broken because he was tripping on LSD
and hallucinogenic mushrooms. "He was really gorked,"
Finch said. "He had a bad trip." He said the rescue, which
involved multiple law enforcement officers plus a helicopter
and an ambulance, cost $5,000 to $10,000.

Dog found in rubble eight days after blast
Employees sifting through the rubble of a Colorado building
that was brought down by a gas explosion said they found a
dog that had been trapped for eight days. Brian Holt,
owner of Good Times Adventures, said Brian Mislanski and
his 8-month-old Springer spaniel, Lulu, were inside the
company's building April 19 when a gas leak caused a
massive explosion, the Rocky Mountain News reported
Wednesday. Mislanski suffered multiple injuries, including
an injury to his left leg that forced doctors to amputate
the limb at the knee. However, rescuers found no trace of
Lulu, so friends and employees of Holt's company canvassed
the area and put up leaflets. Holt said he and a group of
employees were allowed to return to the rubble of the
building eight days after the explosion to recover personal
items. He said they were preparing to leave when "one of
our people said she just heard a dog yipe." The businessman
said they called Lulu's name and followed her whimpers for
45 minutes until they located and freed the dog, who,
veterinarians said, was dehydrated but otherwise uninjured.
Holt said they were able to reunite Lulu with her owner at
the hospital. "Oh, Brian was very happy," Holt said.

Gnome appears on Mount St. Helens camera
Park officials at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic
Monument in Toutle, Wash., say a garden gnome has
mysteriously appeared in front of a camera. The officials
said the gnome was first sighted by the camera -- part of
the park's VolcanoCam Classic, which allows visitors to
view recent images from the park on its Web site -- Tuesday
afternoon, KIRO-TV in Seattle reported Wednesday. The
gnome, located near the Johnston Ridge Observatory, about
five miles from the volcano, is holding a small white sign
that appears to read "I will get the snow," but officials
said the writing is difficult to make out. Park officials
said they do not know who placed the gnome in front of the
camera, but the area is accessible to any park visitors on
skis.
