Global community embraced Earth Hour
The Earth Hour campaign exhibited growing popularity around
the world based on this weekend's energy-saving efforts.
Participants in the United States and Australia who turned
off their lights as part of the purposeful temporary blackout
say by acting individually they hope to influence others to do
the same, ABC News reported Sunday. "If everybody just started
to think about what little bits and pieces they can do for them
in the big picture, that's great. And this is the first little
step toward something big and better," one anonymous Earth Hour
participant in Sydney said following Saturday night's blackout.
The Internet search engine Google also joined the environmental
effort, posting a message to its visitors during the second-
annual event. "We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn,"
the popular site offered visitors. World Wildlife Fund President
Carter Roberts told ABC News that businesses worldwide had also
embraced the cause, investigating ways to improve their energy
efficiency. In Australia, 2 million people and 2,000 businesses
turned off their lights, ABC reported.

Oldest Recording Heard
It pre-dates Edison, and it’s recorded on soot – but you can
still hear it. We all know that Edison invented the phonograph,
but did you know that he didn’t make the first sound recording?
His breakthrough came in 1877, but last week the first known
recording, a 10-second clip of a French folk song, “Au Clair
De La Lune,” made in 1860, was played. It was made using a
phonautograph, the recording being etched by a needle onto
paper covered with soot. The needle was moved by a diaphragm
that responded to sound, although the whole thing was cranked
by hand. Curiously, the recording couldn’t be played back using
the equipment – instead, US scientists had to create a virtual
stylus. David Giovanni, the audio historian who found the
recording, told AP, "When I first heard the recording as you
hear it ... it was magical, so ethereal. The fact is it's
recorded in smoke. The voice is coming out from behind this
screen of aural smoke." The phonautograph was invented by a
Parisian, Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, who made the
recording on April 9, 1860. The sound was finally captured
by a group called First Sounds who worked at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory in California, where high resolution
digital scans of the paper recording were made and played
with a digital stylus.

One More Player in the Space Tourism Game
Xcor Aerospace, a company from California that has been
developing rocket engines for the past nine years, announced
its intention to join the space tourism competition. The plan
is to have their mini-spacecraft, called Lynx, up and running
by 2010. The ship, whose size is close to that of a private
plane, will have two seats, thus allowing only one passenger
on board. To make up for this inconvenient, the ship will be
capable of performing up to four flights a day. Once it takes
off, the Lynx will reach a speed of Mach 2 and get as high up
as 200,000 feet, thus offering the paying customer an
unforgettable view. ”Lynx will be the greatest ride off
Earth,” XCOR test pilot, former pilot, astronaut, and Space
Shuttle commander, Col. Rick Searfoss recently stated (USAF-Ret.).
In all, the duration of a flight will be of 30 minutes.
Everything is being prepared to ensure a maximum safety level
of the flight. The pilot and passenger will wear helmets and
pressure suits at all times. The Lynx will feature an escape
capability but it will not come equipped with ejection seats.
Xcor Aerospace officials have not yet disclosed the estimated
price for their future service. ”We don't usually discuss a
lot of the details of our projects until the hardware rolls
out and that's not so much because of some deep-seated desire
to be secret as it is that we don't want to tie the hands of
our engineers by saying too much too soon,” CEO Jeff Greason
said.
