Alaska's Pebble mine worries biologist
A former federal fisheries biologist is raising concerns about
Alaska's oversight of mineral exploration at the copper and
gold Pebble prospect. Carol Ann Woody, a consultant for the
Renewable Resources Coalition, said drill rigs might be drawing
up water that could harm developing salmon and put heavy metals
into the groundwater, the Anchorage Daily News reported Sunday.
State regulators say the drilling permit was issued to the Pebble
Partnership after considering the affect on fish and the
groundwater, the newspaper said. Regulators said companies
exploring Pebble are authorized to withdraw no more than 130,000
gallons of water per day from kettle ponds and a few stream
segments in the Upper Talarik Creek drainage. In a letter to the
Alaska Department of Natural Resources and other state officials,
Woody said she is worried that regulators are not monitoring the
project closely enough. State officials said they would respond
to Woody's letter soon. "There's no lack of desire by the state
to be transparent about the details," said Tom Crafford, the DNR's
large mine permit coordinator.

Engineers win $1000 for 156-step burger
A team of engineers from Indiana's Purdue University have
been awarded $1,000 for their creation of an elaborate 156-step
hamburger-making machine. Purdue won Saturday's annual Rube
Goldberg Machine Contest, a competition in which engineering
students from across the country create devices to perform basic
jobs with the most possible number of steps, the Lafayette (Ind.)
Journal and Courier reported. "With all the hard work we've put
into this machine, it's just fantastic," said Drew Wischer,
Purdue Society of Professional Engineers team captain.
More than 1,500 people attended the competition at Purdue
University to watch machines from seven U.S. universities
creatively assemble hamburgers with at least one meat patty,
two vegetables and two condiments in a pair of buns.
The winning machine featured King Kong scaling New York's
Empire State Building, London's Big Ben clock and the Eiffel
Tower in Paris among numerous other well-known structures.

Deep Dish Domain, Pizza.com Sells For $2.6 Million
In one of the biggest sales of a domain name in quite some
time, Chris Clark has sold “Pizza.com” for $2.6 million, with
no extra toppings included. 43-year Chris Clark owns a software
company and registered the domain name, Pizza.com 14 years ago.
He spent $20 on the domain name, but never really made much out
of it. He started out by turning it into a pizza and advertising
directory, but not much else. Apparently it never even really
brought in much money. He decided to sell the domain after he
found that a man was able to sell Vodka.com for $3 million.
He started the auction on March 27 with the first bid at $100,
it quickly shot up above $2 million by the end of March, and
ended at $2.6 million to an anonymous buyer. He sold the domain
through an auction held by Sedo.com. He said he now regretted
not buying more domain names in the 1990s.
