Rowling takes stand in copyright lawsuit
British author J.K. Rowling said in a New York courtroom
Monday that a lexicon based on her "Harry Potter" books is
sloppy and incorrect.
Warner Bros. and Rowling are suing RDR Books for copyright
infringement for attempting to publish Steven Vander Ark's
unauthorized reference book, the "Harry Potter Lexicon,"
The Wall Street Journal said on its Web site. Rowling and
Warner Bros. are seeking to permanently halt publication
of the volume.
"Should my fans be flooded with a surfeit of substandard
books -- so-called lexicons -- I'm not sure I'd have the
will or heart to continue," the Journal quoted Rowling as
saying in court.
The report said she also described Vander Ark's book as
"sloppy," "lazy" and "incorrect."
Rowling later issued a statement explaining it gives her
"no pleasure to take legal action" against the publishers.
"I feel very strongly about an important issue that affects
everyone and not just me," she said. "If books that
plagiarize other works are permitted, authors, fans and
readers stand to lose. There are lots of books in many
languages that comment on or criticize 'Harry Potter,' and
that's fine. But the book in this case is different. It
provides no analysis and virtually no commentary. It takes
far too much and it offers precious little in return."
What are your thoughts on Rowling suing RDR Books?

Elderly man intervenes in bank robbery
An elderly Swede who helped police foil three alleged bank
robbers by snapping a photo and attacking one suspect says
he only did what needed to be done. Retired prison employee
Valter Tornberg, 78, took action when he crossed paths with
three gunmen in front of the Swedbank in Ockelbo, Sweden,
The Local reported. "There had been so many break-ins at
the bank and nothing had happened," Tornberg said. "It just
came to me to do something." Tornberg said he was leaving
the bank when the three masked men hurried out of a car
nearby, prompting him to grab his camera and a metal tool
out of his car and head toward them. Before he could snap
a photo, a lookout man spotted him and pointeed a gun at
his chest, the report said. Tornberg took a picture of
the man and continued into the bank, where he was threatened
with a crowbar, but was eventually able to clunk the gunman
in the head with the metal tool he had brought from his car.
Tornberg turned in his photo to police, who later took the
three suspects into custody.

Tesco accused of selling sexy bra to kids
Calling it highly inappropriate, critics say the English
supermarket chain Tesco is marketing a "bust-booster" bra
to 7-year-olds. The Cherokee padded bra, which costs about
$8 and mimics a low-cut style to flatter women's cleavage,
is on Tesco shelves near other clothing for 7- and
8-year-olds,The Daily Mail reported Monday. Critics argue
the bra, called a "bust-booster," is highly inappropriate
for girls as young as 7, especially because most girls that
age haven't even begun developing breasts. "Children grow
up quickly enough as it is. The last thing they need is a
product like this," London mother of two Julie Stephens
said. Tesco has defended its product, claiming it is not
meant to be sexually provocative. "It is a product designed
for girls at that self-conscious age when they are just
developing. Designed to cover up, not flatter, it was
developed after speaking to parents," a Tesco spokesman
said. Tesco was slammed once before in 2006 for selling a
pole-dancing product in its online shopping toy section.
The product was taken off the company's Web site.

Group blasts police 'ploddedygook'
The British Plain English Campaign is objecting to what it
considers excessive use of complicated jargon by the
country's police. The campaign objected to Norfolk Police
changing the name of its control room to "Citizen Focus
Command"; Essex police referring to victims of crime as
customers"; and Suffolk Police titling senior officers
Head of Protective Services, Director of Criminal Justice
Change and Director of Knowledge Architecture, The Daily
Mail reported. "I think 'ploddledygook' is the term to
describe it," said a PEC spokesman. "The police have always
had their own language. In the past, we might have thought
of PC Plod with his flat feet, proceeding a westerly
direction, saying, 'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, what 'ave we got
'ere then?' It was endearing," the spokesman said. "But
now police force Web sites talk about 'customers' and 'end
games' and 'mission statements.' We know what police
officers are and what they do. They don't need to waste
their time calling us 'customers' or telling us that we are
their 'focus' or what their 'mission' is," he said.

What are your thoughts on the states posting child-care
centers records online?
"Anything that can help parents decide which daycare to
choose that will not only provide care, but also a safe
environment for their children is more than a good idea.
It's about time."
"Daycares shouldn't have anything to hide."
Dean
"Child-care centers are public record anyhow so posting
onto web just makes it easier for people to locate them.
Great idea!"
