Williams' comeback done after six carries with chest injury
Ricky Williams' latest comeback lasted one game. The Miami
Dolphins running back will miss the rest of the season with a
torn chest muscle, according to his agent, Leigh Steinberg.
Williams was hurt Monday at Pittsburgh, when he played in his
first game in nearly two years. He returned following a 1½-year
suspension for his latest violation of the NFL drug policy.
Steinberg said the arm will be in a sling from four to six
weeks and the rehab will take five months. But Steinberg said
Williams expects to be ready for next season. "It's sad given
how hopeful Ricky had been about his return to football and
given the amount of effort Ricky had put into his rehabilitation.
But he's optimistic and hopeful for the future." With a winless
record, the Dolphins were desperate for help and eager to
showcase Williams in hopes of increasing his trade value.
Coach Cam Cameron decided to play Williams only a week after
he joined practice. "My No. 1 concern coming into the game,
when you hurry a guy back, obviously he could get hurt,"
Cameron said after the game. The team was off Tuesday, and a
spokesman for the Dolphins said they had no comment on Williams'
status. Miami is 0-11 and plays the New York Jets on Sunday.
Williams was injured in the second quarter Monday on a play
when he fumbled. After being tackled, he was accidentally
stepped on while chest-down on the ground. Williams left the
game, returned briefly and departed for good after one more
carry. He finished with 15 yards in six carries, and the
Dolphins lost 3-0 on a last-minute field goal. Miami running
back Jesse Chatman sat out the second half with a neck injury,
and his availability for the Jets game is in doubt. The
Dolphins' other running backs are Patrick Cobbs and rookie
Lorenzo Booker. The Dolphins lost starter Ronnie Brown for the
season to a knee injury last month. Williams, the 2002 NFL
rushing champion, has played in only 13 games since retiring
in the summer of 2004. He has tested positive for marijuana
at least four times since the Dolphins acquired him in 2002,
and their franchise-record playoff drought began that same
year. Williams hasn't missed an NFL game because of an injury
since 2000 when he was with the New Orleans Saints.

Colts release former sack star Rice, sign RB Lawton
Defensive end Simeon Rice, signed two weeks ago to fill in
for injured Pro Bowler Dwight Freeney, was released Tuesday
by the Indianapolis Colts. Rice, who played one season for
Colts coach Tony Dungy at Tampa Bay, was claimed off waivers
from Denver after Freeney suffered a season-ending foot injury
at San Diego. Rice played the past two games, both as a
reserve, and had one sack. Dungy and other team officials
were not available for comment, Colts spokesman Craig Kelley
said. The team also re-signed running back Luke Lawton, who
played the first six games mainly on special teams, but was
released last month.
Cardinals cut punter Barr, place CB Eric Green on injured reserve
Arizona Cardinals starting cornerback Eric Green is out for
the rest of the season with a groin tear, and the team
released punter Mike Barr on Tuesday. Green was hurt in the
first half of Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to San Francisco.
A third-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech in 2005, Green
had 51 tackles this season, including 47 solo stops. He is the
fourth Arizona starter to go on injured reserve, joining
quarterback Matt Leinart, defensive end Bertrand Berry and
offensive tackle Oliver Ross. Antrel Rolle and Ralph Brown are
the backup cornerbacks.Barr was inconsistent all season. He had
a punt blocked earlier this year and shanked a 17-yarder during
a critical point in overtime Sunday. His line-drive punt led to
a 51-yard return by the 49ers' Michael Lewis. Barr also was the
holder for kicker Neil Rackers. Wide receiver Sean Morey is
listed as the backup holder. Barr was picked up on waivers from
the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly before the team released Scott
Player, Arizona's punter for nine seasons. Barr had not kicked
in an NFL game before this season. The team also released tight
end Tim Euhus and re-signed defensive end Bo Schobel.
Schobel has been signed, then released, by the Cardinals each
of the past two weeks.

Jags sign LB Cooper, release LB Cordova
The Jacksonville Jaguars signed linebacker Marquis Cooper and
released linebacker Jorge Cordova. The Jaguars also moved
rookie defensive end Brian Smith from the physically unable
to perform list to injured reserve. Smith, a fourth-round pick
from Missouri, injured his hip during his senior year and
spent the first 12 weeks of the NFL season on the PUP list.
Cooper, a third-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2004, has played
27 career games for the Buccaneers and Seattle. He was released
by Pittsburgh after the first two games of the season; he was
inactive for both. Cordova re-signed with the Jags three weeks
ago and played two games on special teams.
Jags OT Barnes sidesteps parole violation
A judge ruled that Jaguars offensive tackle Khalif Barnes
didn't violate his drunken driving probation by crashing his
car on his way to medical treatment. Duval County Judge James
Ruth determined that the 25-year-old offensive lineman did
not have any criminal violations or technical violations of
his probation, which ends in January. Barnes crashed his 2007
Mercedes-Benz into a tree in his gated neighborhood Sept. 29,
then left and called police. He said he fell asleep at the
wheel while en route to the stadium for physical therapy
required by the team for an injured ankle. Later, Barnes
called to report the car stolen, but retracted that statement
after talking to police. Prosecutors decided not to file
criminal charges of leaving the scene of an accident in that
case.
