Readers:
I've been sick for the last few days and that has thrown
my blood-sugar for a loop.
It's never fun being sick, but it's even more unpleasant
when you have diabetes or other various health issues.
I just make sure to check my blood-sugar more that I would
during a typical day and drink plenty of water so that I
stay hydrated.
By doing these two things it helps me to keep my diabetes
under control and getting me on the road to recovery.

Older Diabetics at Risk of Physical Disabilities
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Elderly people with diabetes
may be at heightened risk of physical limitations that
could hinder their independence, a new study suggests.
British researchers found that among more than 800 adults
age 65 or older, those with diabetes were more likely to
have problems with walking and performing daily tasks like
bathing, climbing stairs and dressing.
Overall, 46 percent of those with diabetes used some form
of mobility aid, such as a cane or walker. That compared
with 31 percent of men and women without diabetes.
Furthermore, 4 percent of diabetics were "highly dependent"
on someone else to care for them, whereas only 1 percent
of those without diabetes were, the researchers report
in the journal Diabetes Care.
Diabetes-related nerve damage and impaired blood flow to
the legs likely play a role in the higher rate of walking
problems, according to the researchers, led by Dr. Alan
J. Sinclair of the University of Bedfordshire.
Study participants with diabetes also tended to have more
co-existing health conditions, such as high blood pressure
and a history of heart attack or stroke, that could have
contributed to their physical limitations.
According to Sinclair's team, there is "growing
recognition" that older adults with diabetes need help
with more than just blood sugar control. In particular,
more attention needs to go toward their risk of impaired
leg function, the researchers note.
A number of studies, they add, have shown that exercise --
strength training, in particular -- is key in managing
older adults' diabetes. It's likely, the researchers write,
that exercise could improve not only their blood sugar
control, but their mobility as well.

Diabetes in Pregnancy Ups Children's Diabetes Risk
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Danish researchers have
identified a link between the occurrence of type 2
diabetes in adults and the presence of type 1 diabetes
or pregnancy-related diabetes in their mothers.
Dr. Tine Dalsgaard Clausen of Copenhagen University
Hospital and colleagues there and elsewhere tested 597
Danish adults for diabetes or conditions that might
lead to diabetes.
The likelihood of having type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes
was related to the mother's diabetes status during
pregnancy, the investigators report in the medical journal
Diabetes Care.
Specifically, the rate of diabetes or pre-diabetes was
21 percent in subjects born to mothers who had pregnancy-
related diabetes (termed gestational diabetes), 12 percent
in those whose mothers had a genetic predisposition for
diabetes, 11 percent when the mothers had type 1 diabetes,
and 4 percent in subjects born to women with no history of
gestational or other types of diabetes.
The findings support the idea that exposure to high blood
sugar levels in the womb contributes to the development
of type 2 diabetes in adulthood, the researchers conclude.
Aiming for normal blood glucose levels in pregnant women
"may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in future
generations."

Diabetic Recipe
Yogurt Popsicles
(makes 6 servings)
3 cups (708 ml) plain nonfat yogurt
2/3 cup (156 ml) no-sugar-added strawberry syrup
1/2 cup (83 g) sliced fresh strawberries
6 paper cups
6 wooden popsickle sticks
1. Blend yogurt and syrup. Lightly mash strawberries with
a fork or potato masher.
2. Place paper cups in a muffin tin. Divide the yogurt
equally between the paper cups. Add and equal amount
of the mashed strawberries to each cup. freeze until
slushy, about 30 minutes. Insert a wooden stick into
each cup for a handle.
3. Freeze until firm. Peel off paper cups before eating.
(Once frozen, store popsicles in a self-sealing plastic
bag.)
Per Serving: 126 calories (2% calories from fat),
