known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning The Confessions of
Nat Turner. We also bid farewell to basketball legend "Red"

WILLIAM STYRON DIES AT AGE 81
William Clark Styron, Jr. died November 1, 2006 of pneumonia.
Styron was an American novelist, best known for two contro-
versial novels: the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Confessions of
Nat Turner, the leader of an 1831 Virginia slave revolt.
Though Styron’s paternal grandparents had been slave owners,
his Northern mother and liberal Southern father gave him a
broad perspective on race relations unusual for his gener-
ation. Styron spent years researching and composing the novel,
the fictitious memoirs of the historical Nat Turner. Despite
the controversy, the novel became a runaway critical and
financial success, eventually winning the 1968 Pulitzer Prize
for Fiction.

ARNOLD "RED" AUERBACH DIES AT AGE 89
Arnold Jacob "Red" Auerbach died October 28, 2006 of a heart
attack. Nicknamed "Red" from his fiery hair, he was an American
coach and executive for the Boston Celtics in the National
Basketball Association. As coach of the Celtics from 1950 to
1966, Auerbach won nine NBA titles including eight straight
from 1959 to 1966 – the longest string of championships in the
history of North American professional sports. After retiring
from coaching, he continued to serve as the general manager or
president of the Celtics from 1966 until 1997, and again as
president from 2001 until his death. In 1980 he was named the
greatest coach in the history of the NBA by the Professional
Basketball Writers Association of America.

ROBERT ANDERSON, FORMER CHAIRMAN OF ROCKWELL DIES AT 85
Robert Anderson, who as president and chairman of the Rockwell
International Corporation oversaw the construction of NASA
space shuttles and the controversial B-1 long-range bomber,
died Saturday at age 85 of cancer complications in Los Angeles.
Mr. Anderson, who retired in 1988, was president of Rockwell
International and later became its chairman and chief exec-
utive. During Mr. Anderson’s tenure, Rockwell was the prime
contractor for five of the six space shuttles. Five shuttles
actually went into space, starting on April 12, 1981, with the
launching of the Columbia. Since then, there have been more
than 125 flights.

Notable deaths this week in history...

In 1926, legendary magician and escape artist Harry Houdini,
whose greatest escapes still defy explanation even today,
died at the age of 52.
Also in 1926, Annie Oakley, famed sharpshooter who was once
the best known cultural icon in the United States, died at
the age of 66.
In 1955, Cy Young, Famed Pitcher, died at the age of 88
In 1985, Phil Silvers, comedian and actor best remembered
for his role of Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko in the
series "You'll Never Get Rich," died. He was 74.
In 1991, actor Fred MacMurray, whose talents ranged from
playing a bemused husband to an unrepentant heel, died at
the age of 83.
