City Slickers. Also we remember Buddy Kerr, legendary short
stop for the New York Giants, known for his 68 games with

JACK PALANCE, ACTOR, DEAD AT 87
Jack Palance, long time Hollywood actor died yesterday at his
home in Montecito, Calif. He was 87. Mr. Palance first gained
wide notice in 1953, when he electrified movie audiences with
his serpentine portrayal of the nasty gunfighter Jack Wilson
in the classic film "Shane," the performance drew an Oscar
nomination for him for best supporting actor, and it all but
sealed his fate as a perennial Hollywood bad guy for years. He
was cast in "City Slickers," a 1991 western comedy about mid-
life crisis. Mr. Palance played Curly, a leather-tough trail
boss shepherding about some urban greenhorns looking for week-
end adventure. It was a comedy of the sort Mr. Palance had
always wanted, and the performance brought him his only Oscar,
in 1992, for best supporting actor.

JACOB E. SMART, FOUR STAR GENEAL, DEAD AT 97
Gen. Jacob E. Smart, conceived the strategy for the daring
World War II bombing raid on the oil refineries at Ploesti,
Romania, and went on to help shape the postwar Air Force, died
Sunday in Ridgeland, S.C. He was 97. General Smart, came up
with the idea of having planes fly exceedingly low to bomb the
tightly defended refineries, which were believed to be pro-
ducing one-third of the fuel oil for the Nazi war machine. He
became commander of the Fifth Air Force and of United States
Forces in Japan. President John F. Kennedy, in a speech at the
Air Force Academy on June 5, 1963, praised General Smart by
name. The general was then commander in chief of the Pacific
Air Forces. On May 10, 1944, Colonel Smart was blown out of
the bomber over Austria, and became a prisoner of war. Only
he and his bombardier survived. After retiring from the Air
Force in 1966, General Smart held several high positions at
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

BUDDY, KERR, ALL-START SHORTSTOP, DEAD AT 84
Buddy Kerr, an All-Star shortstop who in the 1940s played
68 consecutive games without an error, died on Nov. 7 in
Manhattan. He was 84. Kerr played from 1943-51 for the New
York Giants and the Boston Braves and hit .249 in 1,067
games. He represented the Giants on the All-Star team in
1948. His errorless streak spanned the 1946-47 seasons and
was a record at the time.

JOSEPH UNGARO, NEWS EXECUTIVE, DEAD AT 76
Former managing editor of The Evening Bulletin of Providence
died on Sunday in South Kingston. He was 76. While at the
Associated Press Managing Editors convention in Florida,
in 1973, Mr. Ungaro asked Nixon if he had accurately reported
his income taxes. Nixon’s famous declaration came after he had
gone on to answer a subsequent question about the Watergate
scandal, Nixon doubled back to Ungaro’s question, saying:
"People have got to know whether or not their president is a
crook. Well, I’m not a crook." Nixon later agreed to pay
hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes. Mr. Ungaro
began working for the Gannett Company at its Westchester
Rockland Newspapers in 1974 as managing editor. He later
became vice president and executive editor, vice president
and general manager, and then president and publisher.

Notable deaths this week in history...

In 1868, composer Gioacchino Antonio Rossini, hailed by
Italians as their greatest living opera composer, who wrote
the crown of all Italian operas, "Il Barbiere di Seviglia,"
died. He was 76.
In 1974, Thomas Eadie, Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor
recipient, who served as a Chief Gunner's Mate and Diver in
the US Navy, died at the age of 87.
In 2002, James Coburn, Hollywood tough-guy actor and director
known for his roles in Hollywood western films and classic
television series, died of a heart attack at the age of 74.
In 2003, singer and songwriter Don Gibson, who wrote such
country classics as "I Can't Stop Loving You," "Sweet Dreams,"
and "Oh Lonesome Me," died at the age of 75.
