Welcome to another edition of Dead End.
This week we say good-bye to Darlene Conley who entertained
daytime drama audiences since the late 1970s, as Sally Spectra
on "The Bold and The Beautiful." Also this week we remember
actress Audrey Hepburn, who died this week in history at
the age of 63. She was an Academy Award winning film and
theatre actress, Broadway stage performer, former ballerina,
fashion model, and humanitarian whose career spanned over an
impressive 42 years.

DARLENE CONLEY, ACTRESS, DEAD AT 73
Darlene Conley was an actress, who's career spanned fifty
years, but she was best known for her performances in day-
time television. In 1988 she took on the roll as fashion
designer Sally Spectra on The Bold and the Beautiful, in
which she played until her death. She has earned two
Outstanding Supporting Actress Daytime Emmy nominations since
her first appearance in 1988. Conley began her acting career
at 15 when she was cast in a touring production of "The
Heiress," the Los Angeles Times reported. She later landed
roles in the movies "The Birds" and "Valley of the Dolls" and
on such television shows as "Murder, She Wrote," "Cagney &
Lacey" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

BENNY PARSONS, NASCAR DRIVER AND ANNOUNCER, DEAD AT 65
Benny Parsons a popular champion auto racer, died yesterday
in Charlotte, N.C. He was 65. In 1998 Nascar named him ne of
its 50 greatest drivers in mark of its 50th anniversary. He
was the only driver to have won season championships in both
the Automobile Racing Club of America (1968 and 1969), a Mid-
western stock-car circuit, and Nascar’s top circuit, the
Winston Cup (1973), now the Nextel Cup. Parsons won stock-car
racing’s two major races: the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach,
Fla., in 1975 and the World 600 in Concord, N.C., in 1980. In
1982, he became the first driver to top 200 miles an hour in
qualifying. From 1964 to 1988, Parsons drove in 526 Nascar
races, winning 21 and finishing in the top five 199 times and
the top 10 283 times. Parsons was elected to the International
Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Stock Car Racing Hall
of Fame in 1998.

MICHAEL BRECKER, GRAMMY AWARD WINNING SAXONIST, DEAD AT 57
Michael Brecker, a saxophonist, was among the most influential
musicians in jazz since the 1960s, died in New York City.
He was 57. Brecker earned a total of 11 Grammys both as a
performer and a composer. Most of Brecker's early work is
marked by an approach informed as much by rock guitar as by
R&B saxophone. Mr. Brecker spread his sound all over the
world. His more notable collaborations include those with
James Taylor, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen and Joni
Mitchell. During the early 80s he was also a member of NBC’s
Saturday Night Live band. He also played sax briefly on Frank
Zappa's live album Zappa in New York. His highest achievements
were his own albums and with the Brecker Brothers band, as
well as his early 80s work with the group Steps Ahead.

ROBERT ANTON WILSON, SCI-FI AUTHOR, DEAD AT 74
Robert Anton Wilson, co-author of the cult sci-fi series "The
Illuminatus! Trilogy" while he was an editor at Playboy, has
died at his California home. Wilson was 74. The trilogy which
Wilson wrote with Robert Shea when both were working for Play-
boy in the 1960s describes a world divided between an
authoritarian elite, the Illuminati, and a resistance group,
the Discordians. The books, "The Eye in the Pyramid," "The
Golden Apple" and "Leviathan" have remained consistently in
print since they were published in 1975. Wilson went on to
write many non-fiction books, including "Cosmic Trigger," in
which he claimed to have communicated with extraterrestrials.

Notable deaths this week in history...

In 1942, actress Carole Lombard, whose career spanned from
the silent era to "talkies," was killed in a plane crash.
She was 33.
In 1950, George Orwell, a novelist, essayist and critic,
died from tuberculosis at the age of 46.
In 1993, actress Audrey Hepburn, whose impressive career in
film and theatre spanned 42 years, died at the age of 63.
In 2003, Richard Crenna, a veteran character actor of stage,
film, and television, died at the age of 75.
