Today is a great day thanks to all of you that sent me
the explanation of how "sideburns" got to be called
"sideburns".
Here's the consensus:
The term originated during the Civil War. General Ambrose
Everett Burnside from the Union army wore side whiskers
and a mustache, while shaving the hair on his chin. This
style was known as Burnside's. The term then was burnsides,
and then sideburns.
Very interesting. I really had no idea. You really do learn
something new every day.
