Dallas Cowboys, QB Romo sign new deal
A year ago Monday, Tony Romo made the first start of his NFL career. On Monday, the Dallas Cowboys let it be known that Romo is the quarterback for now and the future. According to multiple sources, Romo agreed to one of the richest deals in team history with a six-year extension worth $67.5 million. The deal includes $30 million in guaranteed money and an $11.5 million signing bonus. At a radio appearance in Plano on Monday night, Romo said a deal was not complete but close. Romo's agent, Ken Kremer, could not be reached for comment. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones declined to comment. Romo said talks between his agent and Jones began to heat up last week. "It's closer than it was," Romo said. "It's neat that the organization is behind you. That makes it fun." In total money, Romo's deal is second in team history to the nine-year, $85.5 million deal Troy Aikman signed in 1998. The money is a staggering figure for a quarterback who has made just 17 regular season starts. But in that time, Romo has proved he can shoulder the responsibility of being the quarterback for America's Team. Since Aikman retired after the 2000 season, the Cowboys' search for his replacement has been long and fruitless.
Rams lose another offensive lineman, guard Icognito
St. Louis Rams guard Richie Incognito will likely miss the rest of the season with a right kneecap injury sustained in Sunday's loss to the Browns. Coach Scott Linehan also said Monday that running back Steven Jackson, sidelined by back spasms in the first half after a strong start, has a bulging disk. But he said the injury is treatable and was optimistic Jackson could be back in the lineup without missing a game after the Rams' bye this weekend. Incognito's injury is likely to require surgery and could leave the Rams with only one opening-day starter, Alex Barron, on the offensive line when they play at New Orleans on Nov. 11. Center Brett Romberg missed the Browns game with two sprained ankles and could be back. Tackle Orlando Pace was lost for the season with a shoulder injury in the opener and guard Mark Setterstrom also is out for the year with a knee injury. Incognito missed the first four games with a high ankle sprain sustained in the preseason. He was hurt in the first quarter Sunday when Linehan said his kneecap popped in and out on a play when his leg was in an awkward position. "It's a somewhat lengthy recovery time," Linehan said.

Petrino, Hall meet to clear air over CBs' critical comments
Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino met Monday with cornerback DeAngelo Hall, trying to sort out their differences over the release of defensive tackle Grady Jackson. Both said they were ready to move on after getting together privately before practice. "Obviously, you don't like to see some of those comments made," Petrino said. "I understand part of it, I guess. I certainly had a meeting with DeAngelo and we'll put it behind us and move on." Hall openly questioned the direction of the Falcons (1-6) after Jackson was released last week, despite being one of the team's most effective linemen. A two-time Pro Bowler, Hall already was fined $100,000 this season for a sideline shouting match with Petrino during a game against Carolina. He wasn't disciplined for his criticism of Jackson's release, which he said made it look as though the team had given up on this season and already was looking ahead to 2008. Hall said he was ready to put the incident behind him. "Yeah, that's the game plan," he said. Hall would not discuss specifics of the meeting with Petrino and vowed to speak to the media only after games for the rest of the season. To fill Jackson's spot on the 53-man roster, the Falcons signed cornerback Brent Grimes off the practice roster. Defensive end Kevin Huntley was added to the practice squad.

Favre's TD bomb on first play of OT stuns Broncos
Brett Favre's 82-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on the first play of overtime lifted the Green Bay Packers to a 19-13 victory against the Denver Broncos on Monday night, further cementing Favre's legend and delivering no relief to a city suffering post-World Series blues. Denver quarterback Jay Cutler engineered an 89-yard drive to the Green Bay 4-yard line in the last two minutes of regulation, but the Broncos had to settle for a hurried 21-yard field goal by Jason Elam as time expired to send the game to overtime. Green Bay moved to 6-1 atop the NFC North with its first-ever victory in Denver (it had been 0-5 in regular-season games and 0-5 in preseason). Denver fell to 3-4 in the AFC West a day after the Colorado Rockies were swept from the Series by the Boston Red Sox. "To be honest with you, when I let the ball go, I thought it was underthrown," the 38-year-old Favre said of his bomb that ended the second-shortest overtime (16 seconds) in NFL history. "The ball stayed up in the air a long time. ... Fortunately for me, it fell in the right place. We keep finding ways to do it, and we do it together. It don't get any better than it was at the end of this game." Broncos coach Mike Shanahan saluted Favre's throw. "It's one of those plays that has to be perfect," he said. "They were right on the money." Favre finished 21-for-27 for 331 yards and two TDs and had a 142.4 passer rating. He also had an earlier 79-yard TD pass to rookie James Jones. Rookie backup running back Ryan Grant, pressed into duty when starter DeShawn Wynn injured his shoulder in the first quarter, sparked the Packers with 104 yards on 22 carries. It was the first time a Packer has rushed for more than 100 yards this season. They came in ranked last in rushing (65.7 yards a game). Favre's first TD pass was his first ever in Denver. The only two cities where he hasn't thrown a TD pass are Baltimore and Pittsburgh. "To come in here and win this game, especially with the momentum swing at the end, it's a credit to our football team," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. Denver played without leading rusher Travis Henry (ribs), but backup Selvin Young ran for 71 yards.
