Colts sign DE Rice as Freeney could miss 4 games
The Indianapolis Colts have claimed defensive end Simeon Rice
off waivers, expecting him to fill in for injured Pro Bowler
Dwight Freeney. The announcement was made by team president
Bill Polian on his weekly radio show Monday night and later
posted on the team's Web site. Rice, released by Denver on
Friday, played one season for Colts coach Tony Dungy in Tampa
Bay. He has 121 career sacks, second among active players to
Michael Strahan of the New York Giants. The Colts (7-2) are
uncertain how much time Freeney will miss. Dungy said earlier
Monday he had not yet met with the doctors and he did not
anticipate it to be season-ending. But Polian said Freeney
could miss four or more games because of a left foot injury
that caused him to be carted into the locker room during Sunday
night's 23-21 loss at San Diego. The Colts have not yet released
details of the injury. "We anticipate that Dwight will miss
some significant amount of time," Polian said. The Colts signed
Freeney in July to a six-year deal, paying an average of $12
million. He has 32 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks on the season.
The 33-year-old Rice was deactivated for two games in October
and has six tackles and five assists on the season. He signed
a one-year, $3 million contract with the Broncos on Sept. 3.
Edwards confirms: Croyle new starting QB for impotent Chiefs
Damon Huard is out and Brodie Croyle is in as starting
quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Herm Edwards
said Monday the strong-armed Croyle, who came in for a shaken-
up Huard against Denver on Sunday, would start at Indianapolis
this week as the Chiefs try to snap a two-game losing streak
and revive one of the NFL's weakest offenses. "You need a
spark," Edwards said. "We've been in some contests now where
we haven't had the ability to score points. That's part of
your job as a quarterback, to put points on the board and
move the football team. We've moved at times, but we've also
been very inconsistent." Croyle was 17-for-30 for 162 yards,
with one interception, in the 27-11 loss that dropped Kansas
City to 4-5. Huard, an 11-year veteran, was a career backup
until he took over for the injured Trent Green last year and
played well in eight games. Huard then beat out Croyle in the
preseason for the starter's job but has been inconsistent --
before Croyle came in Sunday he had thrown two interceptions
and lost a fumble in that game. "Damon's done a good job
helping us win four games. It's never on one guy, obviously,"
Edwards said. "You need a spark. We've been in some contests
now where we haven't had the ability to score points.
"At this point in time, this is a chance for me and this
organization to evaluate a young player that we think has a
chance to play quarterback. But you don't know until he has
an opportunity." A third-round pick in 2006 out of Alabama,
Croyle will be the first quarterback drafted by Kansas City
to start a game for the Chiefs since Todd Blackledge, who
was drafted in 1983.

AMAZING REUNION BETWEEN LION & HUMAN

Vikings Peterson out at least 1 game with injured knee
As Adrian Peterson was prone on the Lambeau Field turf, his
football future flashed before his eyes as a searing pain
radiated from his right knee. "That pain was horrible. I don't
know if you've ever experienced pain where you don't want
anybody to touch you. Just be still for a few minutes until
it calms down. That's the kind of pain it was," Peterson said.
"Not really knowing what to expect because it was my knee. I
was just praying, 'God please, don't let it be anything
serious."' He spent a sleepless Sunday night at his home in
Eden Prairie, with the worry getting so great that he found
himself doing a self-examination of both knees to see if he
could detect any differences, all in the hope of finding some
comfort. After getting an MRI exam on Monday, Peterson should
be sleeping much better now. The rookie sensation, who just a
week earlier set the NFL single-game rushing record with 296
yards against San Diego, will miss at least one game with a
torn lateral collateral ligament. But the injury is not deemed
serious enough to require surgery or jeopardize Peterson's
season. "I was very relieved. It could've been a lot worse,"
Peterson said. "I just thank God. I'll be back soon." Vikings
coach Brad Childress ruled Peterson out for Sunday's game
against Oakland, but wouldn't put a timetable on his recovery
beyond that. Team doctors told Childress that with ligament
tears graded on a three-point scale, with three being the
worst, Peterson's tear is "two-plus." It's not as serious as
an anterior cruciate ligament tear. "He's lucky," head athletic
trainer Eric Sugarman said. "If he's 30 degrees in front with
that foot fixed, we're talking about a very significant injury
today. So he's very lucky that this is all he has."
Peterson was injured in the third quarter Sunday. Packers
cornerback Al Harris hit him in the knee just as Peterson was
about to make a cut downfield, and he writhed in pain for
several minutes in a scary scene.

McNair might be headed back to bench
If his ineffectiveness doesn't send Steve McNair to the
Baltimore Ravens bench, perhaps a sore shoulder will. The
struggling quarterback has developed "substantial soreness"
in his non-throwing shoulder, Ravens coach Brian Billick said
Monday. That, coupled with McNair's unsightly numbers over
the past two weeks, could cause Billick to turn to Kyle Boller
in Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns. McNair, who has
already missed time this season with groin and back injuries,
committed three turnovers and threw for only 128 yards Sunday
before being replaced in the fourth quarter of a 21-7 loss to
Cincinnati. Six days earlier, McNair lost two fumbles and threw
an interception in a 38-7 defeat at Pittsburgh. Billick
insisted Monday no decision has been made on the starting
quarterback against the Browns, saying he needed more information
on McNair's physical status. "Right now, the injury is what we
will have to address first and foremost, to see exactly what
that is," Billick said. McNair was given two weeks off before
the Ravens' bye on Oct. 28. But the extended break did little
to increase his effectiveness, and now Baltimore (4-5) is mired
in a three-game losing streak that has all but shattered the
team's bid to return to the playoffs.
Kitna says of back injury: I'm fine
Quarterback Jon Kitna dismissed questions about a back injury,
despite concerns raised by coach Rod Marinelli. Marinelli said
Monday that Kitna had a lower back injury, but Kitna disagreed.
"I feel as good today as I have in five weeks," he said. "I'm
fine." Marinelli said cornerback Fernando Bryant was questionable
for this weekend's game against the visiting Giants with a
sprained foot, and defensive end Dewayne White could return
after missing Sunday's loss at Arizona with an arm injury.
Offensive tackle Jonathan Scott is expected to miss his second
straight game with a broken thumb.
