Housewares going purple
Red, white and blue are always big colors in U.S. presidential
election years, but purple? Various shades of purple and numerous
varieties of greens were the breakout colors at the International
Housewares Association trade show in Chicago. "I expected the
green with the emphasis on 'green' products, but the purple
really surprised me," said Lisa Casey Weiss, who monitors trends
for the trade association. Missing from this year's show were
new products for the patio. In the past couple of years, house
manufacturers sported items that made the patio an extension
of the living room, offering grills and fire pits as well as
other outdoor accessories. This year only a few grills were
on display. One new product for the outdoors was the Drink
Daddy Portable Wine and Beverage Station from Iola Global
Designs LLC. The table is lightweight and foldable, with cup
holders in the corners as well as deeper holes for bottles.
Still big are various speaker sets for MP3 players. Aside from
the clock radio version and various tabletop speakers, Sound
Oasis featured a speaker pillow and Homedics offered a $10
speaker shaped like a sprocket -- it's even called Sprocket --
aimed at the stocking-stuffer crowd.

Cassini flies through geysers of Saturn's moon
The international Cassini spacecraft collected science data
on mysterious geysers spewing from Saturn's moon Enceladus
and recorded new images of its surface during a close flyby,
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said Thursday. The pass
Wednesday brought Cassini as close as 30 miles to the surface
of the moon. It went through the icy geysers at 32,000 mph and
an altitude of 120 miles, the lab said. It's hoped that
instrument data on density, size, composition and speed of
plume particles will provide clues to whether there's a water
ocean or organics inside the frozen moon. The geysers spew water
vapor from fractures in the moon's south pole. New pictures
taken by Cassini show the surface of the north polar region
is much older than the southern hemisphere and is pitted
with craters, the lab said. Cassini imaging scientist Carolyn
Porco said the images provide an important comparison for
"working out the moon's obviously complex geological history."
Porco, of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., said
the next big step will be getting detailed images of the surface
sources of the plumes during a low-altitude flyby this summer.
The lab said that during Wednesday's flyby, one of Cassini's
instruments, the Cosmic Dust Analyzer, had an unexplained
software problem that prevented it from collecting data during
closest approach, but it did collect data before and after.
Other instruments functioned properly, it said.

Dextre Passes All Tests But One On ISS
Dextre, the Canadian Space Agency’s $209 million space station
robot, was tested for the first time on Sunday. Dextre was put
through tests of its joints, as well as brakes for the first
time. This was the first attempt on the International Space
Station to test out the functionality of Dextre, who has
11-foot arms which will allow it to perform maintenance tasks
on the ISS. All but one of the joints passed the first series
of tests according to reports. Managers stated though that
it is nothing to worry about. The program manager for the
Canadian Space Agency, Pierre Jnea, stated “All the
diagnostics … were successfully accomplished.” Jean, as well
as engineers saw improvements in the one joint as they
continued to calibrate and work out further tests. Jean stated
it was Arm 2 that had problems. The issue was with the wrist-
pitch joint. They wanted to get a 10.3 degree of slippage,
they were at 10.4. More work will be done on Monday on Dextre
as they continue to finish up things on this tremendously
advanced space robot.
