Is China attacking Belgian computers?
Belgian officials say an attempt to infiltrate critical computer
networks appears to have come from China. Justice Minister
Jo Vandeurzen told newspapers he believes the Chinese government
is engaged in espionage. The attacks were carried out using e-mail
with software that can send information back to the attacker,
Gazet van Antwerpen and De Tijd reported. The Chinese are
allegedly interested in Belgium because the European Union
and NATO have their headquarters in Brussels. Belgium also has
historical ties to Africa, a continent becoming increasingly
important to China. The Intelligence Committee has begun an
investigation, Flandersnews reported. China has allegedly
carried out similar attacks on German and Dutch computers.

Happy birthday, dear spam
Spam, not the food product but the Internet nuisance, is having
its 30th birthday, though a California computer scientist doesn't
seem inclined to celebrate. It was May 30, 1978, that the first
unsolicited e-mail ad landed in an Inbox connected to Arpanet --
the Advanced Research Agency Projects network -- a research project
that predated the Internet, the San Francisco Chronicle reported
Saturday. The first spam was an ad for Digital Equipment Corp.,
a computer manufacturer that did not have the stamina to outlive
spam. Engineers developing Arpanet condemned spam from the first,
the Chronicle said. "It was rather an insult to one's
sensibilities to have an obvious commercial message sent out
over a research network," said computer scientist Peter Neumann
of Menlo Park, Calif. Neumann was one of 393 people who first
experienced the aggravation of spam. Brad Templeton, an Internet
pioneer who heads the non-profit Eletronic Frontier Foundation,
has written that it took 15 years for people to start calling the
junk spam. Templeton told the Chronicle it wasn't until 1994,
when all kinds of people were traversing the information
superhighway, that spam was able to reach out and annoy
large numbers of Internet users.

Boomers pursue more youthful brain
U.S. baby boomers, scared their brains are decaying, are driving
a mini-industry of brain health products, retailers tell The
New York Times. The products don't just include food supplements
like ginseng, but computer games or software advertised as able
to restore some brain function. The Times said computer
products include Nintendo's Brain Age 2, a video game with
"simple math and memory exercises," and MindFit, a software
program that combines cognitive assessment with a personalized
training regimen based on that assessment, and selling for about
$149. David Bunnell, a magazine publisher who lives in Berkeley,
Calif., is among those with memory fears When he went to a FedEx
store a few years ago to send a package, "I couldn't remember my
address," Bunnell, 60, told the Times "with a measure of horror
in his voice." "I knew where I lived, and I knew how to get there,
but I didn't know what the address was." The newspaper said Bunnell
is among tens of millions of baby boomers facing a decline of
brain sharpness.
