figures, there is Betsy Ross, Paul Revere, Joan or Arc,
and featured below Sir Isaac Newton. Also this week we
remember the basketball great, Pete Maravich. He still
remains the youngest player to be inducted into the
Basketball Hall of Fame.

****Some famous people born during this week in history:
-- January 4, 1642 - Sir Isaac Newton
Born in Lincolnshire, England, physicist and mathematician
Isaac Newton studied at Cambridge and is one of history's
foremost scientists. After discovering the laws of gravity
in 1665-6, Newton studied the nature of light and, in 1687,
wrote his famous "Mathematical Principles of Natural
Philosophy."
-- January 3, 1956 - Mel Gibson
Born in Peekskill, NY, producer, director and actor Mel
Gibson's first success was in Mad Max (1979), and he went
on to international fame in blockbuster hits such as Lethal
Weapon (1987) and Braveheart (1995). Gibson bankrolled and
directed the controversial, The Passion of the Christ in 2004.
-- January 1, 1969 - Verne J. Troyer
Actor and stunt man stands at 2 feet 8 inches tall, making him
the shortest actor in the trade. Troyer's most famous role is
Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies, a character who is a mini-
ature clone of Dr. Evil. He also appeared as Griphook in Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Troyer appeared as himself
in an Apple Computer commercial for its 12-inch and 17-inch
PowerBooks, in which he used the larger computer and Chinese
NBA star Yao Ming used the smaller one. He was married to
Genevieve Gallen, but Troyer filed for annulment on February
23, 2004. Troyer also appeared on VH1's 4th of season of The
Surreal Life.
****Some famous people who have died during this week
in history:
-- January 5, 2004 - Frank Edwin "Tug" McGraw Jr.
Major League Baseball relief pitcher, and the father of
country music singer Tim McGraw. He became a full-time
reliever for the New York Mets in 1969, as they went on to
win the World Series. During the 1973 season, the Mets won
the National League East with only 82 wins, but managed to
make the World Series. On December 3, 1974, McGraw was traded
to the Philadelphia Phillies. At the time of the trade, McGraw
was the all-time Mets leader in saves, games pitched, and
games finished. In 1980, he helped the Phillies win the NL
East. His finest efforts came in the World Series, striking
out ten batters in 7 2/3 innings. He saved the final game,
clinching the Phillies' first World Series championship. He
was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1993 and
to the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame in 1999.
-- January 5, 1988 - Peter "Pete" Maravich
American basketball player known for his incredible shooting
abilities, creative passing, and dazzling ballhandling. Also
known as "Pistol Pete", he starred in college and for three
NBA teams. Maravich is still the all-time leading NCAA scorer,
averaging a staggering 44.2 points per game, without the
benefit of a three-point line. Maravich was inducted into the
Basketball Hall of Fame in May 1987. He was, and still is, the
youngest player to be inducted. In 1996, he was named one of
the 50 greatest NBA players in history by a panel made up of
NBA historians, former players, and coaches. He was the only
deceased player on the list. Then in 2005, ESPNU named
Maravich the greatest college basketball player of all-time.
