****Some famous people who have died during this week
in history:
-- Jane Wyatt - October 23, 2006
Born August 12, 1910,
Jane was prototypical housewife and mother in the television
series "Father Knows Best," Before taking her role in the
television series, Wyatt had already established herself as
a television pioneer, serving as host of the "Bell Telephone
Hour." But it was her co-starring role with Robert Young on
"Father Knows Best" that catapulted her to stardom and led
her to become the first consecutive winner of the Academy
of Television Arts & Sciences' Emmy Award. In the late 1960s,
she appeared in an episode of "Star Trek" as Spock's mother,

Jackie was the first African American baseball player in
Major League Baseball in 1947. Robinson's debut at first base
with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, in which he
batted 0 for 3, was one of the most closely watched events
in baseball history, and a profound moment in the history of
the U.S. civil rights movement. Robinson was awarded the
Rookie of the Year award in 1947, and the Most Valuable
Player award for the National League in 1949. He not only
contributed to Brooklyn pennants in both years, but his
determination and hustle kept the Dodgers in pennant races
in 1950 and 1951 when they might otherwise have been
eliminated much sooner. Robinson's achievement has been
recognized by his uniform number, 42, being retired by
all Major League Baseball Teams; the number will never again
be given to a player.
