Cincinnati Bengals sign WR Gabriel
Receiver Doug Gabriel, who was out of the NFL last season,
signed a one-year contract Tuesday with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals added Gabriel to their thin receiving corps as week
after they released No. 3 receiver Chris Henry last week
following his latest arrest. Oakland drafted Gabriel out of
Central Florida in the fifth round in 2003. He played for the
Raiders through 2005, and was traded to New England. Oakland
claimed him off waivers during the 2006 season, then released
him last August.
Bears LB Brian Urlacher may skip voluntary workouts
Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher might skip the team's voluntary
offseason workouts while he seeks a contract extension.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Urlacher planned to miss
Monday's first day and perhaps the rest of the workouts, which
include organized team activities. The Bears declined to disclose
whether Urlacher participated Monday, and the workouts are closed
to the media. Urlacher can't be fined since the workouts are
voluntary. But when linebacker Lance Briggs and former running
back Thomas Jones skipped voluntary offseason workouts in 2006,
the team demoted them from starting roles for a brief time.
Urlacher has a contract that runs through 2011. He made $3.95
million last season and is slated to make the same amount this
season.

Free agent LB Victor Hobson leaves Jets for Patriots
The New England Patriots signed free agent Victor Hobson on
Monday, bolstering their aging linebacker corps. Hobson, 28,
has spent all five of his seasons with the New York Jets,
starting 58 of the 76 games he played. He joins a linebacking
group that had Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel and Junior Seau as
starters last season. All are over 30. "Victor is a good
young player with considerable playing experience," Patriots
coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. Hobson, a second-
round draft pick out of Michigan in 2003, started 14 games
last year with 62 tackles and two sacks. His best season was
2006, when he had 100 tackles, six sacks and an interception.
Saints sign cornerback Aaron Glenn
The New Orleans Saints signed cornerback Aaron Glenn on Monday,
hoping the 14-year veteran free agent can help shore up a shoddy
pass defense. Glenn, a former first-round pick who started four
games for Jacksonville in 2007, has 41 career interceptions, six
of them for touchdowns. He ranks fifth among active NFL players in
interceptions. Terms of the deal were not released.
The Saints were 30th in the NFL in passing yards allowed last
season, giving up 245.2 per game. Glenn, 5-feet-9, 183 pounds,
was the top pick of the New York Jets in 1994. He spent his first
eight seasons with the Jets and since has played for Houston, Dallas
and Jacksonville. He played in five games last season, making one
interception, which he returned for a touchdown. Glenn's first
season with the Cowboys overlapped with current Saints coach Sean
Payton's final season as an assistant in Dallas under Bill Parcells.
Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs also was an assistant in
Dallas that season. The Saints' starting cornerbacks in 2007,
Mike McKenzie and Jason David, both will be back next season,
but McKenzie is rehabilitating from reconstructive knee surgery
and may not be ready to play when the regular season opens.
David had a difficult adjustment to New Orleans' defensive scheme
last season, getting beaten for several long touchdowns.
The Saints also have signed former New England Patriots and
LSU cornerback Randall Gay during the offseason. Glenn has not
been a full time starter since 2004, his last season in Houston,
when he started all 16 games.

Jaguars QB David Garrard signs contract extension with Jaguars
Quarterback David Garrard has signed a contract extension with
the Jacksonville Jaguars. Terms of Monday's deal were not released.
But Garrard and his agent, Albert Irby, had been looking for
something similar to the six-year, $67.5 million contract Dallas
quarterback Tony Romo signed last season. The 30-year-old
Garrard is coming off his best season. He completed 64 percent
of his passes for 2,509 yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing
three games because of an ankle injury. He threw just three
interceptions and finished with the NFL's third-highest passer
rating (102.2). A longtime backup who beat out Byron Leftwich
last preseason, Garrard was entering the final year of a four-
year deal that paid about $2 million annually.
Cornerback/kick returner Chris Carr joins Titans as free agent
Cornerback and kick returner Chris Carr officially joined the
Tennessee Titans when the Oakland Raiders declined to match
Tennessee's offer sheet. The Titans signed Carr, a restricted
free agent, a week ago. The Raiders had until Friday night to
match the contract. The Titans said Saturday that Oakland had
declined to match the offer sheet. Tennessee hopes to improve
its return game with the addition of Carr, the Raiders' career
leader in kickoff returns with 201 and kickoff return yards
with 4,841. In three NFL seasons, Carr has played in 48 games
with four starts.

Redskins make 1st free agent addition, sign WR-KR Jerome Mathis
The Washington Redskins added a free agent for the first time
this offseason Friday, signing receiver and former Pro Bowl
kick returner Jerome Mathis. Mathis made the Pro Bowl as a
returner with the Houston Texans in 2005, but he was injured
for most of the last two seasons. He became a free agent this
year when the Texans opted not to make him a qualifying offer
at the end of the season. Mathis has had two recent run-ins
with the law. In December, he received a misdemeanor citation
after his pit bull chewed through a fence and was behaving
aggressively. In February, he was charged with assaulting his
pregnant common-law wife, a charge that was later dropped at
the woman's request. The 24-year-old Mathis broke the NCAA
record for career kickoff return average at Hampton, averaging
26.6 yards. He also holds the NCAA record for career kickoff
returns for a touchdown with six. The signing is a minor first
addition for the usually big-spending Redskins, who
uncharacteristically have de-emphasized the free agent market
this year and are instead concentrating on this month's draft.
Washington's only previous moves this offseason had been to
re-sign some of their own free agents.
Bengals release RB Quincy Wilson, who was arrested last year
Running back Quincy Wilson has been waived by the Cincinnati
Bengals. It is the second time in the past five days the Bengals
released a player who had been arrested. The second-year running
back from West Virginia was arrested last June 17 in Huntington,
W.Va., and charged with disorderly conduct for failing to
disperse after a weekend wedding party. The Bengals waived him
Monday. Wilson was the 10th Bengals player arrested in a 14-
month span. The Bengals recently released receiver Chris Henry,
another former West Virginia star, after he was arrested last
week on an assault charge, his fifth arrest while he was with
the team.
