Lawyer: Former Bengals WR Chris Henry trying for NFL team
Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry will be
released from court-ordered electronic monitoring and house
arrest so he can try out for another NFL team. Hamilton County
Municipal Court Judge Richard Bernat issued the ruling Tuesday,
when Henry's attorney Perry Ancona said the player has an offer
to try out for a team. Ancona did not identify the team.
The 24-year-old has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges
of assault and criminal damaging dating to March, when a
University of Cincinnati student told police Henry punched him
in the head and damaged his car. Henry was suspended by the NFL
for eight games last season because of earlier arrests. The
Bengals released him last month. Henry will be required to show
the court a letter from the team he's trying out for before he's
permitted to travel.
Bears release S Adam Archuleta
The Chicago Bears released veteran strong safety Adam Archuleta
on Tuesday, ending a brief and disappointing tenure with the team.
Archuleta, 30, broke a hand early last season and started in just
10 of the 15 games in which he appeared. He lost his starting job
to Brandon McGowan and finished the season on special teams.
The Bears drafted LSU safety Craig Steltz in the fourth round
of last month, but Tuesday's announcement was still a surprise.
Coach Lovie Smith said at an NFL combine in February the Bears
did not plan to cut Archuleta. "Adam, just like some more of
our players, didn't have the type of season we were hoping, he
was hoping," Smith said. "But he's still a part of our ballclub
and we're expecting him to come back stronger this year." The
Bears acquired Archuleta from the Washington Redskins in March
2007 for a sixth-round draft pick. When he joined Washington
in 2006, he received the largest contract ever given to a
safety: $30 million for six years, with a $10 million bonus.
But he flopped, starting seven games while playing mostly on
special teams and finishing the season as a third-stringer.
St. Louis drafted Archuleta with the 20th overall pick in 2001.

Jets resign CB Poteat to 1-year deal
The New York Jets re-signed veteran cornerback Hank Poteat to
a one-year deal Tuesday. Poteat was an unrestricted free agent.
He spent the last two seasons with the Jets and played in every
game, notching a career-high 45 tackles while starting nine
games. Poteat had the first two interceptions of his eight-year
NFL career in consecutive games last season against Philadelphia's
Donovan McNabb and Cincinnati's Carson Palmer. The 30-year-old
Poteat is expected to give the Jets' secondary some depth along
with starter Darrelle Revis, fourth-round pick Dwight Lowery and
veterans David Barrett, Justin Miller and Andre Woolfolk. A
third-round pick out of Pittsburgh in 2000, Poteat has also
played for Tampa Bay and New England.
Steelers draft pick Mendenhall robbed
Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall
was robbed at gunpoint along the Chicago lakefront early Monday,
his mother and agent said. The former running back was not hurt
in the robbery, during which two people stole Mendenhall's wallet
and cellular telephone, his mother, Sybil Mendenhall, told the
Chicago Tribune. "He didn't get hit or anything, he didn't get
hurt or anything," Sybil Mendenhall said. "He's fine." Police
spokesman John Mirabelli said a man and a woman were robbed at
the lakefront around 2 a.m. Monday by two offenders, but
declined to identify the victims. No one was in custody for
the crime, he said. "It was obviously a scary moment," Mendenhall's
agent, Mike McCartney, told the Chicago Sun-Times. "But he is fine.
He is doing great. He said he doesn't have anything that is worth
his life." The Steelers selected Mendenhall with the 23rd pick
in this year's NFL draft. The 20-year-old Mendenhall skipped
his senior year at Illinois to enter the draft. He was the 2007
Big Ten offensive player of the year.

Redskins draft pick Fred Davis a no-show at practice
Washington Redskins second-round draft pick Fred Davis did not
show up for minicamp practice Sunday, having overslept on just
his third day in the NFL. The team sent security officials to
track down the tight end after he failed to arrive as scheduled
from a local hotel, where the rookies were housed during the
three-day minicamp. "Everybody was scouring," coach Jim Zorn
said after the practice. "Nobody heard from him, so there was
one of two scenarios: either there was some real trouble and
we needed to find him, or he screwed up. I haven't even got to
talk to him yet. I know he has been found. I believe it is more
in the 'I screwed up' category." Davis eventually arrived at
Redskins Park and met with Zorn in his office. "He just had a
setback," the coach said. "Hopefully everybody will learn from
the lesson that he is having to learn right now about what it
is going to take to get to a place on time, to be responsible."
Davis was the 48th overall pick out of Southern California in
last weekend's draft.
Broncos promote Goodman to VP of operations/personnel, hire Xanders
The Denver Broncos have named Jim Goodman vice president of
football operations/player personnel and hired former Atlanta
Falcons executive Brian Xanders as assistant general manager.
Xanders spent the last 14 seasons in Atlanta. He's in charge of
the Broncos' salary cap and will assist in personnel matters.
Goodman served as Denver's director of player personnel for the
last two years and has worked in the club's player personnel
department for the last decade. He'll oversee the day-to-day
football operations and continue to run the Broncos' scouting
department. Xanders will work with assistant GM Jeff Goodman, who
oversees pro personnel and handles contract negotiations.
The Goodmans had their duties expanded after coach Mike Shanahan
fired general manager Ted Sundquist this spring. The Goodmans
and Xanders all report to Shanahan. The Broncos also named Anthony
Kelly as assistant coordinator of pro and college scouting.

Redskins WR Randle El has knee surgery
Washington Redskins receiver Antwaan Randle El had arthroscopic
knee surgery Tuesday and is expected to recover in time for
training camp. Coach Jim Zorn said an MRI discovered a "floating
body" that was causing an irritation in Randle El's knee. "When
they went in, whatever they found they will fix, and we will get
him back going," Zorn said. Zorn gave a preliminary estimate of
a recovery time of three to four weeks, which means Randle El
could be back on the field for offseason practices in June.
Training camp begins in mid- to late-July. Also Tuesday, safety
Reed Doughty again missed practice to attend to his son, Micah,
who recently underwent a kidney transplant. Micah came down with
a virus over the weekend and his fever spiked at 105.8 degrees.
Doughty missed the final day of minicamp on Sunday to be with
his son but was back on the field for Monday's offseason
practice before being absent again Tuesday. "Reed had to go to
the hospital again to make sure he is taking care of his child,"
Zorn said. Defensive tackle Kedric Golston also did not practice
Tuesday. He sprained his right ankle during Saturday's minicamp
practice. "His ankle is still swollen, so he can't run," Zorn
said. "No use in getting him out here running around." The
Redskins also made several minor roster moves, signing quarterback
Derek Devine and safety Patrick Ghee. They released defensive
end Alonzo Dotson, quarterback Bret Meyer, safety Kevin Mitchell
and safety Justin Scott. Devine and Ghee were both undrafted
free agent rookies in training camp with Zorn's old team, the
Seattle Seahawks, last year. Neither made the Seahawks' final
roster.
