The Jersey Shore is 127 miles of public beachfront stretch-
ing like a pointing finger along the Atlantic Ocean from
the Sandy Hook Peninsula in the north to Cape May at the
southern tip. There is no one description of what it's
like "down the shore." Things change town by town and
sometimes season by season -- winter storms have a habit
of rearranging beaches and boardwalks.
Some shore towns, such as Wildwood, are party hot spots
with all-out amusement piers; others, such as Ocean Grove,
which was originally a Methodist camp meeting ground,
Spring Lake, and Cape May, are more sedate Victorian
enclaves. Atlantic City has its glitzy casinos.

Absecon Lighthouse
Nautical Site, Atlantic City
The 1857 lighthouse was designed by George Meade, stands
171 feet tall, and is the oldest man-made tourist attrac-
tion on the Jersey shore. You can tour the adjacent
lightkeeper's house and climb to the top for a great view
of Atlantic City. In winter, call ahead to check that the

Gardner's Basin

Once a home to pirates, privateers, and whalers, this
site is now a restored maritime village and waterfront
park complete with historic vessels, a museum, and two
restaurants. The Ocean Life Center

Duck is in the center of the small town of West Cape May,

the city's oldest restaurant serves seafood in a setting
