To's ankle remains questionable
Terrell Owens suddenly seems a lot more questionable to face
the Giants on Sunday than he did early in the week. The
Cowboys' Pro Bowl wideout, who is battling a high left ankle
sprain suffered just three weeks ago, didn't practice yesterday
and probably won't practice today, either. Owens took part
in a walk-through with the team Monday but couldn't even
bring himself to do that yesterday. He also didn't speak
with reporters, save one hallway interview with a curvy,
bare mid-riffed reporter from Mexico's TV Azteca. Owens, who
set the Cowboys' single-season franchise record with 15
touchdown catches this season, is instead working on the
side with the team's training and medical staffs. "He says
he's feeling a little better - that's all I know," coach Wade
Phillips said yesterday. "It's day-to-day. He works at it at
home trying to get better, but this is sometimes a six-to-eight
week injury. Sometimes it's a four-week injury, but we're
trying to get him back in three." Phillips said the Cowboys
remain hopeful Owens will start against Big Blue after he
recovered with lightning speed from a broken ankle three years
ago to play for the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX against
New England. "The guy played a pretty good Super Bowl game
they said he wasn't going to play," Phillips said. "I've
got to be hopeful of that."
Browns plan to extend Crennel's deal, keep Anderson as starting QB
As a reward for Cleveland's comeback season, the Browns plan
to extend coach Romeo Crennel's contract. We have every intention
of doing something right by Romeo," Browns general manager Phil
Savage said Wednesday. Crennel, 60, signed a five-year deal with
the Browns in 2005. He began this past season with his future in
doubt and a 10-22 record to show for his first two seasons in
Cleveland. But after a terrible start, the Browns went 10-6
behind an explosive offense and barely missed the AFC playoffs.
Crennel, who won five Super Bowl rings as an assistant, is 20-28
in his first stint as an NFL head coach. Savage said Crennel's
extension will be addressed in the near future, possibly in the
next few days. "Romeo has a great connection with the team," said
Savage, who praised Crennel's efforts during his 2007 season wrapup
news conference. "I think the players really respect him." Earlier
this week, the Browns gave offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski a
two-year extension. Savage said the Browns were "open to a couple
of different things" when he was asked if Crennel would get a
multiyear extension. Also, Savage said the Browns have begun talks
with quarterback Derek Anderson's representatives on a long-term
contract. Anderson, who began the season as Cleveland's backup,
threw 29 touchdown passes in his first year as a starter and was
selected as a Pro Bowl alternate. Savage believes Anderson,
scheduled to become a restricted free agent, deserves to start
again following his breakout season. "He deserves a chance to
go into the batter's box and swing for the fences next year,"
Savage said. The Browns want to prevent Anderson from going
on the open market, where other teams could make him an offer
Cleveland would have to match to keep the 24-year-old quarterback.
With Brady Quinn waiting in the wings, the Browns feel they
have two good quarterbacks -- a rare commodity in the league.
"We want to go into next season with both quarterbacks," Savage
said. "I don't want to do anything to derail us from having a
good season." Also, Savage is hoping to re-sign running back
Jamal Lewis to a long-term contract. Lewis rushed for 1,304
yards in his first season for Cleveland, which signed him to
a one-year, incentive-based deal in March. "Jamal has indicated
that he really likes it here," Savage said.

Judge Cuts Titans Out of 'Pacman' Suit
A Nevada judge dropped the Tennessee Titans as a defendant
in a lawsuit brought by a strip club employee paralyzed in a
triple shooting following a melee involving suspended player
Adam "Pacman" Jones. Clark County District Court Judge Jessie
Walsh agreed with team lawyers who contended the Titans should
not be held responsible for Jones' behavior at the Minxx
Gentleman's Club last Feb. 19, during the NBA All-Star
weekend. That was the night Tommy Urbanski and two other people
were wounded. Lawyers for the NFL say they intend to file a
similar request next week for the judge to drop the league
from the case. Urbanski's lawyer, Matthew Dushoff, says he'll
seek a rehearing.
Gridiron Greats to raise $500K for needy NFL retirees
From poker to beer sales, the days leading up to the Super Bowl
offer the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund many chances to raise
money for needy retired NFL players. The nonprofit group
launched by former Green Bay Packers star Jerry Kramer hopes to
raise $500,000 through its efforts, said Jennifer Smith,
executive director of the Green Bay-based fund. More than 70
former NFL players and coaches are expected to participate in
at least one of the events to be held during Super Bowl week
in Phoenix. Among the people scheduled to attend are ex-Bears
coach Mike Ditka, former Dolphins coach Don Shula, former Bears
linebacker Dick Butkus, ex-Packers running back Paul Hornung,
ex-Lions running back Barry Sanders and former Bills quarterback
Jim Kelly. Miller Brewing Co. will donate a portion of sales of
Miller Lite bottles and cases in Arizona from Jan. 1 to Feb. 3,
spokesman Julian Green said. He said Miller also is hosting a
monthlong fundraising campaign for the group that's expected to
raise $100,000. Events include a dinner, a party, and golf
and poker tournaments. For a minimum $6,000 donation, four
people can play golf with an NFL great. A "Texas Hold Em"
poker tournament has a $1,000 buy-in, which includes being
seated with a football star. The top prize: a Harley-Davidson
motorcycle. An online auction that ends on Super Bowl Sunday
Feb. 3 allows fans to bid on taking an African safari trip
with Hall of Fame players, having dinner with Ditka in
Chicago, and memorabilia signed by players. A sneak peek of
the items will go up next week on the group's Web site, with
bidding to begin the week of Jan. 21. Starting Friday, fans
can buy tickets to a dinner during Super Bowl week that will
feature Ditka and dozens of other players. Tickets cost $250
or $500 and some include the chance to sit with an NFL great.
